CEO’s Business Review The year under review saw the Company going full steam ahead in giving back and sharing with society. CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY IN THE COMMUNITY Gaining Higher Altitude in the CSR Skies Being a fl ag-bearer of the PETRONAS Group of Companies inducted into the country’s public-listed companies with commendable CSR practices fraternity, PGB continues to climb to higher altitudes within the skies of good CSR practices. The Company believes in the concept of empowerment for those benefi ting from the Company’s CSR efforts. The Company’s aspiration is to create sustainable value for the society with the hope of aspiring people everywhere, particularly in geographies where it operates. Hence, most CSR initiatives undertaken by PGB are education-driven, the most signifi cant being the seasoned and proven Program Bakti Pendidikan PETRONAS (PBPP) which focuses on developing the potential of marginally performing school students to excel in their studies. PBPP is a structured and integrated longterm education programme focusing on students categorised as borderline students by the school and Education Department. The programme includes special tuition classes conducted by the school teachers to improve academic achievements specifi cally in Mathematics, English and Science for Year 4, 5 and 6 primary school students in which the tuition fees were paid to the teachers via a voucher scheme fully funded by the Company. At the same time, the programme also gives equal emphasis on soft skills via scheduled fun learning sessions conducted by PGB staff volunteers who selfl essly invest their time and energy on a monthly basis. The Company has undertaken four schools under its wings, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu Anam in Segamat, Johor; Sekolah Kebangsaan Santong in Paka, Terengganu; Sekolah Kebangsaan Pinang Tunggal in Kepala Batas, Pulau Pinang; and Sekolah Kebangsaan Kemasik in Kertih, Terengganu. In the year under review, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kemasik 58 petronas gas berhad (101671-h) has been phased out to make way for PGB to extend its wings to include another school under its patronage and help deliver more outstanding students in the selected school. PBPP has long since yielded the desired results and this year is one that the Company is proud to announce. The greatest achievement of PBPP for the year under review was the outstanding results of the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) 2010 for the PBPP students of the four schools under the Company’s care. This achievement is a priceless reward for the tireless efforts undertaken by PGB staff volunteers in that the quality of the results improved tremendously of which out of the 94 PBPP students that sat for the examination, 92% passed. Even more overwhelming is the fact that 19 students obtained 5As while another 57 scored a combination of 4As and 3As. This is a highly encouraging achievement compared to 2009 where 16 students obtained 5As and 12 students obtained 5As in 2008. The ability of the students under PBPP to achieve 5As, 4As and even 3As scores is considered a
monumental success in spite of them being initially categorised as marginal students. We at PGB believe that the achievements of these students, could be a life changer for them and their families’ future which the Company is proud to be a part of. The year under review also saw the Company going full steam ahead in giving back and sharing with the society in return for their continuous support throughout the years. A series of CSR programmes were carried out encompassing a wide range of activities from visiting patients at hospitals, assisting single mothers, fi xing old and dilapidated homes of the needy, to giving motivation and moral support to orphans. Our staff commitment in working together to contribute back to the community was exemplary. An integrated and structured series of CSR activities under the tagline “Bakti Dihulur, Kasih Disemai”, which means every act of kindness instils the spirit of caring for each other were implemented at a magnitude far greater than in preceding years. The management and staff contributed their personal time, energy and money for these activities. Through these personal contributions, the Company was able to conduct an average of one CSR activity per week covering numerous locations throughout Malaysia where PGB operates. WHAT’S IN STORE THIRD PARTY ACCESS The Queue Starts Here The year under review also saw the Company progressing steadily in preparing for Third Party Access (TPA) for Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) pipeline system. Implementing TPA will enable parties other than PETRONAS to utilise available capacity in the PGU gas pipeline system for gas transportation to end customers. It will spur growth opportunity for the company’s gas transportation business, diversify its business portfolio and support regional growth of the industry including cross-nation gas 59 annUaL report 2011 FROM LEFT: The Company’s staff tirelessly dedicate time and money to assist the needy.
