The green initiative used pilot 3R (Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle) concepts at PGB Head
Offi ce, zooming on paper consumption
reduction in an effort to instil awareness
and embrace sustainability on waste issues.
At other PGB divisions, leveraging on waste
management as PETRONAS group-wide
central issue this year, four other main
activities were deployed. The activities include
waste recycle programme, minimising water
use and electricity consumption, scheduled
waste management and electrical system
improvement. Competition programmes
zooming in on paper consumption reduction
was held at PGB Head Offi ce; water and
electricity consumption reduction competition
at Transmission Operations Division (TOD);
and general waste reduction competition at
Centralised Utilities Facilities (CUF) and Plant
Operations Divisions (POD) were also carried
out.
Various avenues were utilised to promote
the 3R activities and programmes in order to
inculcate awareness and sense of ownership
of waste issues at sites. For PGB Head Offi ce,
initiative on paper consumption reduction,
an initial set target reduction based on
last year’s consumption pattern was also
communicated.
The campaign met its objective of creating
general awareness on the importance of paper
consumption reduction. Similar campaign will
be constantly organised in the near future
as testimony of the Company’s commitment
towards environmental preservation.
For TOD, the campaigns generated positive
results with a signifi cant improvement especially
in the electricity savings after considering the
greener and more sustainable options such
as replacement to LED bulbs from the normal
conventional bulbs. Notwithstanding that,
other activities conducted simultaneously also
generated positive results. This was particularly
seen in the electricity and water resource
savings as a result of awareness sessions being
conducted to all staff.
For CUF and POD, the campaigns went on
to inculcate more awareness to staff where
activities related to conserving environmental
resources like car-pooling instead of single
driver to and from offi ce, greening offi ce
buildings by planting more trees at open or
unoccupied spaces to minimise heat-island
effects (a phenomenon which has accompanied
and increased with urbanization, and it refers
to the fact that man-made structures tend to
attract and retain heat at a higher rate than
normal in nature. This results in an increase
in ground-level ozone production by as much
as 30%. Hence, energy saving campaigns
by switching off lights at unutilised areas,
electrical devices such as computers and
utilising offi ce blinds to reduce internal heat
were conducted. On top of that, talks on
energy saving were conducted regularly to
instil awareness among staff.
ENVIRONMENTAL RISK REPORTING
The year under review also showed an
increasing improvement of the environmental
risk reporting via PGB Health Safety and
Environmental Management System such
as Environmental Aspect Impact exercises,
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)/
Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) report
preparations as well as internal audits. With
POD being the latest division to be certifi ed with
ISO 14000:2004 (Environmental Management
Systems), prompt reviews of consultants’ draft
reports by HSE staff ensures the feedback
will be given on time to further support asset
owner on any potentially damaging risks to
the environment. Many projects were covered
effectively this year, which include the PGU 1

project (PGURE), LNG Regasifi cation Facilities
project, CO2 Supply to MOX Linde (COSMO),
Retrofi tting Works for Turbotronic 4 Upgrade
at Kerteh Compressor Station at GPPA
KCS-A, GPP-A (Turbotronic), Export Terminal’s
Loading Arm project, PasirGudang/Gambang
and Tronoh City Gates projects.
