Bronze Star<br />
bronze Star is the pre-bronze Medallion training standard and is<br />
excellent preparation for success in bronze Medallion. In bronze<br />
Star, candidates develop problem solving and decision making skills<br />
as individuals and in partners. They develop WaterSmart confidence;<br />
learn CPR and basic lifesaving skills.<br />
Prerequisites:<br />
• 11 years <strong>of</strong> age is recommended by the last<br />
day <strong>of</strong> the course<br />
• Ability to swim 200 meters<br />

Bronze Medallion<br />
bronze Medallion award teaches an understanding <strong>of</strong> the lifesaving<br />
principles embodied in the four components <strong>of</strong> water rescue education:<br />
judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries,<br />
defenses and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues <strong>of</strong><br />
increased risk, involving conscious and unconscious victims <strong>of</strong> various<br />
types. Candidates also develop stroke efficiency and endurance in<br />
timed swims.<br />
Prerequisites:<br />
• 13 years <strong>of</strong> age by the last day <strong>of</strong> the course or<br />
completion <strong>of</strong> bronze Star<br />

Bronze Cross<br />
bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge <strong>of</strong><br />
more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision<br />
in aquatic facilities. bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced<br />
lifeguarding and leadership training programs.<br />

• bronze Medallion (need not be current)<br />
• 14 years <strong>of</strong> age is recommended<br />

Bronze Medallion/Bronze Cross Combo<br />
this course teaches an understanding <strong>of</strong> the lifesaving principles<br />
embodied in the four components <strong>of</strong> water rescue education judgment,<br />
knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers will progress from self rescue<br />
techniques to more advanced skills such as managing aquatic<br />
spinal injuries and preventing the loss <strong>of</strong> life in a variety <strong>of</strong> aquatic<br />
emergencies.<br />

• 13 years <strong>of</strong> age by the last day <strong>of</strong> the course or completion<br />
<strong>of</strong> bronze Star; 14 years <strong>of</strong> age is recommended<br />

national Lifeguard Service Pool option<br />
nLs is recognized as the standard <strong>of</strong> measurement <strong>of</strong> lifeguarding<br />
performance in Canada. The National Lifeguard Service® (NLS) award<br />
builds on the skills, knowledge and values that the Lifesaving Society<br />
teaches in its Canadian Swim Patrol, jr. Lifeguard Clubs and bronze<br />
Medal awards to develop the practical skills and knowledge required<br />
by lifeguards. nLs pool option trains lifeguards in safety supervision<br />
and rescue in a pool environment.<br />
Prerequisites:<br />
• 16 years <strong>of</strong> age by the last day <strong>of</strong> the course<br />
• bronze Cross by the first day <strong>of</strong> the course<br />
(need not be current)<br />
• Standard First Aid (SFA) with a CPR-C or Aquatic<br />
emergency Care (AeC) with a CPR-C (need not be current)<br />

& recert<br />
nLs award holders are recertified by completing an nLs Precert-<strong>Rec</strong>ert<br />
Clinic. The precert acts as an opportunity for review and allows the<br />
candidates to become familiar with the evaluation standards. the<br />
recert acts as the actual evaluation segment. to remain current you<br />
must recertify every 2 years.<br />
