Arthritis<br />

Arthritis Fitness<br />

this gentle fitness class is designed specifically for people with arthritis.<br />

instructed by fitness leaders trained to deliver safe and effective<br />

exercises for those living with arthritis. Classes will be self-paced and<br />

participants may exercise while seated in a chair and/or while standing<br />

with a chair to provide support when required. Please check with your<br />

doctor before starting this or any exercise program. A health history<br />

form will be given to all registrants and must be completed and brought<br />

to the first session. Classes will start with 45 minutes <strong>of</strong> fitness and<br />

end with 15 minutes <strong>of</strong> social interaction time. no seniors discount.<br />

Arthritis Society- Chronic Pain Management<br />

The Chronic Pain Management Workshop will improve your knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> pain management, introduce different methods <strong>of</strong> handling pain<br />

and will encourage you to take an active role in reducing the impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> arthritis on your life. You will learn techniques to deal with joint and<br />

muscle pain, and how to manage stress and fatigue. This free 2 hour<br />

workshop is delivered by the Arthritis Society, bC & Yukon Division<br />

trained instructors.<br />

Arthritis Society-Self Managment Program<br />

Location: Parkinson Activity Centre, Meeting room<br />

the Arthritis self-Management Program which was developed at<br />

Stanford university is designed to give you the tools and knowledge<br />

you need to take control <strong>of</strong> your arthritis and/or fibromyalgia. Offering<br />

training and practical advice, this research-based program enhances<br />

your understanding <strong>of</strong> arthritis and empowers you to take a more<br />

active role in managing it. This free 6 week program is delivered by<br />

the Arthritis Society, bC & Yukon Division trained instructors. There<br />

is however a $25.00 fee for the program resource material ‘Arthritis<br />

helpbook’ which participants will receive at the first class. bursaries<br />

are available for those with limited incomes through the Arthritis<br />

society to cover the cost <strong>of</strong> the resource material.<br />

Making Cents <strong>of</strong> Healthy eating<br />

Healthy eating is an important part <strong>of</strong> managing and preventing<br />

diabetes, however, healthy eating can also be expensive. This workshop<br />

will show you something new about healthy eating. there are many tips<br />

and suggestions that can help you make the most <strong>of</strong> your food dollars.<br />

We discuss the importance <strong>of</strong> eating healthy as part <strong>of</strong> the solution to<br />

diabetes prevention.<br />

disease, its signs, symptoms and risk factors. You will be more aware<br />

<strong>of</strong> the complications that diabetes can lead to and also ways to prevent<br />

them. We will also discuss diabetes management through healthy<br />

eating and active living. small changes can result in huge benefits in<br />

the prevention <strong>of</strong> this disease. Handouts provided. instruction through<br />

a Canadian Diabetes Association trained volunteer.<br />

this presentation is designed fro individuals who are health care<br />

workers, including students in care giving programs, dietitians, fitness<br />

experts, and/or caregivers for seniors. Type 1, Type 2, Gestational and<br />

Pre-diabetes will all be discussed. A goal <strong>of</strong> this workshop is to provide<br />

information about the seriousness <strong>of</strong> diabetes. the caregiver will<br />

become more active in acquiring the necessary in-depth knowledge<br />

and training to provide appropriate care. We will touch on how to<br />

live well with diabetes and how complications may be prevented or<br />

delayed. handouts provided. Instruction through a Canadian Diabetes<br />

Association trained volunteer.<br />

people with diabetes. We will discuss possible ways to avoid these<br />

complications and stay healthy. Handouts provided. instruction<br />

through a Canadian Diabetes Association trained volunteer.<br />

Pre-Diabetes<br />

Location: Parkinson Activity Centre, Meeting room<br />

this session <strong>of</strong>fers an early warning and giving the individual<br />

opportunities to change the future. Although not everyone with Prediabetes<br />

will develop Type 2 diabetes, many will. however, research<br />

shows that one may develop some long-term complications associated<br />

with diabetes. Thus, it is best if a person becomes aware <strong>of</strong> the Prediabetes<br />

characteristics and condition early and then engages in<br />

strategies that promote a healthy lifestyle. This workshop will combine<br />

information about Pre-diabetes with strategies contained from<br />

nutrition, physical activity and preventing complications. handouts<br />

provided. Instruction through a Canadian Diabetes Association trained<br />

volunteer.<br />
