Cultural Participation Survey 2011 (Malta, 2012)<br />

Methodology 2005 Census provided sampling frame. Target population size for this survey<br />

amounted to 349,684 persons. 1,441 people surveyed in April 2011.<br />

Objectives to provide an overview of all the main characteristics associated to cultural<br />

The questionnaires used include questions on; use of media (including type of<br />

programme), language use (Maltese, English), use of Internet, reading habits, visits<br />

to cinema, live performance and cultural sites<br />

Data was collected on frequency of use/visits.<br />

Socio-demographic variables:<br />

sex, age, number of persons in household, income, marital status, educational level,<br />

number of children, employment situation, languages spoken, religion, ethnicity.<br />

Methodology The survey was conducted in form of direct questionnaires. Two respondent groups<br />

were covered using two different questionnaires. The first one was addressed to 300<br />

randomly selected citizens and the second one to 300 performance viewers.<br />

Objectives The main objective of the survey was to determine the frequency of citizens’<br />

participation in selected cultural activities and factors determining attendance, the<br />

preferences related with types of cultural events and repertoire and the sources of<br />

The cultural selected forms were:<br />

� Theatrical performances<br />

� Opera and Operetta<br />

� Classical music concerts<br />

� Art exhibitions, private views, galleries, etc.<br />

Some of the variables used to gather the information were: frequency and<br />

significance of participation, reasons for non-participation, perception and evaluation<br />

of the level of the cultural event and other demographics<br />
