Methodology 5004 residents of French territory over15 years were interviewed, irrespective of their<br />

legal status, language or nationality.<br />

and media as well as to evaluate the impacts of Internet and the new media.<br />

The scope of the survey is on all forms of participation in cultural life (reading books,<br />

listening to music, attending cultural events, amateur cultural and artistic activities) and it<br />

stresses the importance of the uses of traditional media (TV, Radio, Press) and new<br />

media technologies.<br />

Cultural domains considered:<br />

� Audiovisual equipment<br />

� Computer and Internet uses<br />

� Television<br />

� DVD and Cinema<br />

� Radio and listening to music<br />

� Reading (books and press)<br />

� Attendance at cultural events and places<br />

� Amateur practices<br />

Other demographic and economic data were also gathered such as age, sex, occupation,<br />

level of education accomplished, income, marital status, etc.<br />

Notes This was the fifth edition of this national survey which was also run in 1973, 1981, 1988 et<br />

1997.<br />
