Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities 2001-2008 (Japan, 2001-2008)<br />

Methodology Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities (Fundamental Statistical Survey) - This survey<br />
has been conducted every five years since 1976. The 2006 Survey is the seventh in the<br />
series and was conducted by the self-enumeration method at 80,000 households in the<br />
selected enumeration districts of the 2000 Population Census. The total size for the whole<br />
country was about 99,000 households and 270,000 persons aged 10 and over. A booklet of<br />
questionnaires was filled in by each household member.<br />
National Time Use Survey - This survey has been conducted by Nippon Hoso Kyokai<br />
(Japan Broadcasting Corporation) every five years since 1960. The survey was addressed to<br />
persons of 10 years and over, numbering 45,120 in 2000 and 12,600 in 2005.<br />
Survey on Leisure Activities - This survey has been conducted every year since 1976. The<br />
survey is conducted on a sample of 3,000 persons of 15 years and over residing in cities with<br />
a population of 50,000 or more.<br />
Objectives The purpose of this survey is to obtain comprehensive data on people’s daily life that cannot<br />
be fully captured by economic statistics. For this purpose, it collects data on people’s daily<br />
time budgeting as well as all sorts of leisure activities in which people were engaged during a<br />
year.<br />
The main objectives of the survey are:<br />
� To investigate the time use and leisure activities of Japanese people<br />
� To examine the daily time allocations of people in order to make broadcasting<br />
programme better suited to daily lives of most people and also to provide basic data<br />
for wider users in this area.<br />
� To analyse people's attitude to leisure and participation to the leisure activities in<br />
Cultural domains /<br />
Other issues<br />

The section of time use and leisure activities contains statistics on average time spent on<br />
various daily activities, participation rates in leisure and learning activities and sports.<br />
The questionnaire consists of the following sections:<br />
� Personal Characteristics<br />
� Household Characteristics – only for the head of the household<br />
� Five categories of leisure activities were investigated (sports, studies and research,<br />
social activities, hobbies and amusements, and travels and excursions)<br />
� Items for time use<br />
Daily activities were classified into 20 categories and grouped into the three broad categories.<br />
The classification is as follows:<br />
Category I Activities (Physiologically necessary activities) (1) Sleep, (2) Personal care, and<br />
(3) Meals<br />
Category II Activities (Activities which a person is committed to perform as a member of the<br />
family or the society) (4) Commuting to and from school or work, (5) Work, (6) Schoolwork,<br />
(7) Housekeeping, (8) Nursing, (9) Child care, and (10) Shopping<br />
Category III Activities (Other activities, which are mostly done in free time) (11) Moving<br />
(excluding commuting), (12) TV, radio, newspapers or magazines, (13) Rest and relaxation,<br />
(14) Studies and researches (excluding schoolwork), (15) Hobbies and amusements, (16)<br />
Sports, (17) Social activities, (18) Social life, (19) Medical examination or treatment, and (20)<br />
Other activities.<br />
