Chapter 1: Introduction<br />

1.1 Background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Study<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this study is to <strong>for</strong>mulate a <strong>framework</strong> <strong>for</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

Virtual Design Studio (VDS) <strong>in</strong> architectural <strong>design</strong> education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

United Arab Emirates (UAE). Architecture <strong>design</strong> is a fundamental part<br />

<strong>of</strong> architecture education where <strong>the</strong> students get <strong>the</strong> hands-on<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> what <strong>the</strong>y learn <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory-based lectures. The rapid<br />

development <strong>of</strong> technology shapes <strong>the</strong> way <strong>design</strong>ers th<strong>in</strong>k and <strong>design</strong>.<br />

Technology <strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>stance refers almost exclusively to In<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

Communications Technology (ICT). It has been a necessity that future<br />

architecture <strong>design</strong>ers be equipped with technological skills <strong>for</strong> better<br />

future and effectiveness <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir career. Architecture <strong>design</strong> education<br />

has to respond to <strong>the</strong> requirement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> future market. It is vital to make<br />

students aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> available technology and how to use it, but it is <strong>of</strong><br />

great consequence to teach students how to utilise <strong>the</strong> technology to<br />

produce <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>design</strong> ideas. Utilis<strong>in</strong>g technology <strong>in</strong> <strong>design</strong><br />

education will enhance <strong>the</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g environment and support <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>design</strong>ers to create <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>design</strong>s. The literature review revealed<br />

that <strong>the</strong>re is a worldwide concern about us<strong>in</strong>g technology <strong>in</strong> <strong>design</strong><br />

education. The literature 1 also <strong>in</strong>dicated that <strong>the</strong>re is a need to reth<strong>in</strong>k<br />

<strong>design</strong> education to get <strong>the</strong> best utilisation <strong>of</strong> its tools <strong>for</strong> <strong>design</strong><br />

purposes.<br />

As human development is <strong>the</strong> core <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE‟s future vision, equipp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

UAE nationals with <strong>the</strong> latest technology <strong>in</strong> an appropriate manner is<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE's priorities. The importance <strong>of</strong> utilis<strong>in</strong>g technology <strong>in</strong><br />

education has also been observed to be an essential issue <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE.<br />

The researcher attempted this research after spend<strong>in</strong>g two years<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g as a lecturer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Higher Colleges <strong>of</strong> Technology (HCT) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

UAE. The researcher observed <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> appropriate utilisation <strong>of</strong><br />
