With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 10 day between <strong>the</strong> first and second session, after <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial group<br />

<strong>for</strong>mation, research and observations must be collected and collated as participants<br />

will be required to prepare a 2 m<strong>in</strong>ute <strong>in</strong>dividual presentation on <strong>the</strong>ir return. The<br />

participants should summarise <strong>the</strong> urban conditions and <strong>the</strong> issues Sharjah faces,<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g similarities with o<strong>the</strong>r cities <strong>in</strong> The United Arab Emirates and overseas. They<br />

will <strong>the</strong>n carry out fur<strong>the</strong>r research <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> Sharajah specifically look<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

how <strong>the</strong>y could re<strong>design</strong> Sharjah whilst reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> emphasis on heritage.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al presentations will consist <strong>of</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>gs, a physical <strong>model</strong>, per<strong>for</strong>mance or<br />

digital display which will capture <strong>the</strong> essence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir idea. At this po<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>the</strong> research<br />

has to be cited ra<strong>the</strong>r than expla<strong>in</strong>ed. The ideas must be clearly articulated <strong>in</strong> 2 m<strong>in</strong>ute<br />

presentations which will be critiqued, <strong>the</strong>n shown <strong>in</strong> a 4 m<strong>in</strong>ute film <strong>in</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation on <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong>. The <strong>studio</strong> <strong>in</strong>sists on <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> metaphor,<br />

nam<strong>in</strong>g, and philosophical background as crucial tools. Feedback and discussion are<br />

reserved <strong>for</strong> tutorials and collaborative workshops.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al day will present <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>for</strong> everyone to witness and discuss all<br />

presentations be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation. This will be made possible by <strong>the</strong> re<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> groups <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> ideas to be presented. Throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> strategies, participants will be exposed to a broad range <strong>of</strong><br />

technologies, s<strong>of</strong>tware, digital mediums and applications. Each participant must work<br />

with physical as well as data <strong>model</strong>s where appropriate, <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> which will be<br />

collected by tutors <strong>for</strong> a catalogue <strong>of</strong> future material.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g consultation with <strong>the</strong> tutors <strong>the</strong> participants must decide on <strong>the</strong> outputs <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir presentations. Each participant must produce a 3 m<strong>in</strong>ute digital film version <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir strategy and provide <strong>the</strong> appropriate material <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> evidence such as<br />

texts, photographs and films. The participants must accompany this with a document<br />

<strong>of</strong> 100 words outl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir idea.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project tutors <strong>the</strong> participants are required to express <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own briefs and <strong>for</strong>mulate an appropriate outcome to tackle <strong>the</strong> problems fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Sharjah. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong>, this perta<strong>in</strong>s to <strong>the</strong><br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ation with all participants to make <strong>the</strong> VDS. Tutors and participants will meet<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong> to discuss projects <strong>in</strong> progress, and tutors are not permitted to<br />

en<strong>for</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ir own philosophies on <strong>the</strong> participants but <strong>in</strong>stead to encourage<br />

participants to th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> a different way, but ultimately make up <strong>the</strong>ir own m<strong>in</strong>ds.<br />

At all times participants are required to justify <strong>the</strong>ir response and <strong>design</strong> strategies<br />

which should show an understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> philosophical and historical l<strong>in</strong>eage <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir ideas and why <strong>the</strong>y now have <strong>the</strong> permission to th<strong>in</strong>k and act <strong>in</strong> a particular way.<br />

Ultimately, participants are responsible <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>design</strong>s and <strong>in</strong>stallations.<br />
