f. Observations and Analysis <strong>of</strong> Cardiff Chimera Case Study<br />
Staff Pr<strong>of</strong>iles<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>iles illustrate <strong>the</strong> variety <strong>of</strong> academic backgrounds, ages,<br />
<strong>in</strong>terests and attitudes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contributors which lent to <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong><br />
perspectives and variation <strong>of</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g methods. The contributors served to lead<br />
<strong>the</strong> students <strong>in</strong> new directions; expos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to new ideas which at times caused<br />
confusion, but ultimately stimulated creativity. Each contributor guided <strong>the</strong><br />
students towards different ideas which provoked <strong>the</strong> students’ determ<strong>in</strong>ation to<br />
champion <strong>the</strong>ir specific <strong>design</strong> ideas.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Richard Goodw<strong>in</strong>, College <strong>of</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Art, University New South Wales,<br />
Australia<br />
Practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> over 30 years as an <strong>in</strong>ternationally exhibit<strong>in</strong>g artist and architect,<br />
Goodw<strong>in</strong> has susta<strong>in</strong>ed a prolific pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice <strong>of</strong> art and architecture. His<br />
work, rang<strong>in</strong>g from freeway <strong>in</strong>frastructure, to gallery <strong>in</strong>stallation, to “parasitic”<br />
architecture / public artworks, is held at major collections <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g: <strong>the</strong> Art<br />
Gallery <strong>of</strong> NSW, <strong>the</strong> National Gallery <strong>of</strong> Victoria, <strong>the</strong> Nuremburg Museum and<br />
numerous Regional Gallery and private collections.<br />
W<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>of</strong> numerous prestigious art awards <strong>for</strong> his work, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Goodw<strong>in</strong> is one <strong>of</strong><br />
Australia’s most prom<strong>in</strong>ent sculptors. Concerned with <strong>the</strong> ‘neighbourhood’, ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />
than <strong>design</strong> aspects <strong>of</strong> urban plann<strong>in</strong>g, he adheres to <strong>the</strong> notion that a city must<br />
be a functional social neighbourhood <strong>for</strong> its <strong>in</strong>habitants.<br />
Orig<strong>in</strong>ally tra<strong>in</strong>ed as <strong>in</strong> Architecture, Goodw<strong>in</strong> graduated <strong>in</strong> 1977 <strong>the</strong>n cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />
to ga<strong>in</strong> a Master <strong>of</strong> Architecture <strong>in</strong> 2000. In 2008 he was awarded his PhD from<br />
<strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> New South Wales, and is currently a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Design Studies<br />
at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> New South Wales College <strong>of</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Arts (COFA), and rema<strong>in</strong>s<br />
0.5, enabl<strong>in</strong>g him to practice with<strong>in</strong> his own <strong>studio</strong> through which he cont<strong>in</strong>ues to<br />
exhibit and to pursue public art and “parasitic” architectural projects.<br />
Goodw<strong>in</strong> established <strong>the</strong> Porosity Studio at COFA <strong>in</strong> 1996. The <strong>studio</strong> blurs <strong>the</strong><br />
boundaries between art and architecture and uses <strong>the</strong> city as a laboratory. S<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
2004 <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong>s were run as <strong>in</strong>tensive, <strong>in</strong>ternational, multi-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
workshops. In 2007, <strong>the</strong> British Council began sponsor<strong>in</strong>g students from around<br />
<strong>the</strong> world to participate <strong>in</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> 3 Porosity Studios with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United<br />
K<strong>in</strong>gdom because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work produced and diversity <strong>of</strong> networks<br />
