� Self Assessment: Students will also be subject to self assessment which<br />

will be provided <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> a questionnaire, found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> open<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g work-book.<br />

� Peer Assessment: Students will be subject to peer assessment, which<br />

will be recorded on <strong>the</strong> VDS group Facebook page wall. Individual<br />

Facebook groups will also be monitored and assessed.<br />

� Project Assessment: Students will be assessed on <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al film<br />

presentations at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation, along with <strong>the</strong>ir 100 word written<br />

brief.<br />

Students will also be required to assess <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong>, and tutor per<strong>for</strong>mance and <strong>in</strong>put,<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g a questionnaire provided <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> open learn<strong>in</strong>g workbook.<br />

9.0 Studio Descriptors<br />

The Virtual Design Studio aims to eng<strong>in</strong>eer creative collaborative <strong>design</strong>, employ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

multi-technological applications and digital media tools to excel connectivity and<br />

collaborative practice <strong>in</strong> architecture and <strong>design</strong>. Coord<strong>in</strong>ated by Computer Science<br />

Lecturer, and technological <strong>design</strong> visionary Amal Al-Ali, <strong>the</strong> project aims to encourage<br />

students from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Sharjah’s School <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g to collect, collaborate<br />

and reth<strong>in</strong>k Sharjah as a develop<strong>in</strong>g city. With <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> specifically selected<br />

expert tutors, <strong>the</strong> participants must re<strong>design</strong> <strong>the</strong> future prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Sharjah with its<br />

heritage and religion placed firmly at <strong>the</strong> root <strong>of</strong> <strong>design</strong>. The students will take part <strong>in</strong><br />

revolutionary <strong>studio</strong>-based workshops, with tasks taken from a multitude <strong>of</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>tensive three day <strong>studio</strong> will require students to complete onl<strong>in</strong>e and hardcopy<br />

open learn<strong>in</strong>g workbooks. They will consistently update and share <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, make<br />

observations and present material both verbally and via <strong>design</strong>ated digital mediums.<br />

The participants will be expected to work collaboratively <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> <strong>design</strong><br />

ideas l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> old Prov<strong>in</strong>ce to <strong>the</strong> new develop<strong>in</strong>g, cosmopolitan Sharjah.<br />

The <strong>studio</strong>’s focus is firmly placed on creative collaboration and will <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>tensive,<br />

<strong>in</strong>ter-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary workshops to encourage quality work regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> art and<br />

<strong>design</strong> when redef<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>design</strong> and architecture through <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> <strong>virtual</strong> <strong>design</strong><br />

pedagogy. It will embrace a diverse range <strong>of</strong> experience as students from <strong>the</strong> United<br />

Arab Emirates (UAE) will study <strong>the</strong> urban and suburban conditions <strong>of</strong> Sharjah. Students<br />

from Architecture, Urban Plann<strong>in</strong>g and Design discipl<strong>in</strong>es will work collaboratively to<br />

explore <strong>the</strong> possibilities <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>design</strong> solutions through <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>virtual</strong> <strong>design</strong><br />

tools and practices. The organisers will coord<strong>in</strong>ate and document <strong>the</strong> project, and<br />

closely tutor <strong>the</strong> students. They will prepare all essential materials and technological<br />

tools to facilitate and enhance <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>design</strong> concepts,<br />

culm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> film presentations.<br />
