2.3.2 Contemporary Architecture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAЕ<br />

In late seventies, <strong>the</strong> economic wealth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE ga<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong><br />

discovery <strong>of</strong> oil generated an urgent need to construct new build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

more suited to <strong>the</strong> demands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE‟s <strong>in</strong>habitants. Municipalities<br />

established plann<strong>in</strong>g departments <strong>in</strong> both rural and urban areas to<br />

oversee work on civilian hous<strong>in</strong>g, plus commercial and public<br />

constructions. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Mahgoob 80 an era <strong>of</strong> rapid change <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

built environment ensued. Western architects enjoyed <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g roles<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> new build<strong>in</strong>gs (us<strong>in</strong>g new materials and re<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>ced<br />

concrete). This Westernisation featured an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g use <strong>of</strong> technology<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>design</strong> process. 81 The Western <strong>in</strong>fluence was fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased by <strong>the</strong> Arabic Academics‟ utilisation <strong>of</strong> Western text books as<br />

references (ra<strong>the</strong>r than by improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> local materials which adhered<br />

to <strong>the</strong> religious aspects <strong>of</strong> Arabic architecture).<br />

The current social and cultural evolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE affects all aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> life. Civilians depend on cars and o<strong>the</strong>r transport methods and this <strong>in</strong><br />

turn causes cities to expand too rapidly. Uncontrolled expansion<br />

trans<strong>for</strong>ms major cities <strong>in</strong>to metropolitan areas and evolves <strong>the</strong><br />

traditional lifestyle <strong>in</strong>to a postmodern one. The trans<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

UAE society from a simple traditional Bedou<strong>in</strong> society that depended on<br />

basic needs to a complex modern one has been witnessed through<br />

time. The trans<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE to<br />

accommodate <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current development encouraged new<br />

transportation systems. The trans<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants from <strong>the</strong><br />

primitive life style to a modern one is witnessed through <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />

<strong>of</strong> villas to replace <strong>the</strong> simple houses.<br />

Current architectural practices not only affect <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

landscape but <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants‟ social and cultural lives. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

O‟Reilly 82 <strong>the</strong> community is now based on social class and wealth ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than <strong>the</strong> traditional family neighbourhood. The relationships between<br />
