Chapter 7: Evaluation<br />

7.1 Introduction<br />

In this section VDS 3 is evaluated and <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case study<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>implementation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third VDS (VDS 3) are represented.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>ses are exam<strong>in</strong>ed and addressed alongside <strong>the</strong><br />

primary hypo<strong>the</strong>sis. An evaluative approach is used. Many 309 have<br />

classified evaluation as a f<strong>in</strong>e tool consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> assess<strong>in</strong>g educational<br />

programmes or o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> educational products while <strong>the</strong>y are be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

developed to help shape <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>for</strong>ms.<br />

7.2 Def<strong>in</strong>itions <strong>of</strong> Evaluation<br />

The most frequently given def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> evaluation is found to be:<br />

“Evaluation is <strong>the</strong> systematic assessment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> worth or merit <strong>of</strong> some<br />

object.” 310<br />

But as <strong>the</strong>re are many types <strong>of</strong> evaluation that do not result <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> worth or merit <strong>of</strong> an object many consider this def<strong>in</strong>ition as lack<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r def<strong>in</strong>ition found to be more adequate is:<br />

“Evaluation is <strong>the</strong> systematic acquisition and assessment <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation<br />

to provide useful feedback about some object.” 311<br />

From this def<strong>in</strong>ition we conclude that <strong>the</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong> an object is to get<br />

useful feedback about an object <strong>of</strong> study to help improve it and<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g its usefulness. There are many types <strong>of</strong> evaluation, but<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> this study three types <strong>of</strong> evaluation were used:<br />

<strong>for</strong>mative evaluation, summative evaluation and experience evaluation.<br />

Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se evaluation types was used to achieve a certa<strong>in</strong> outcome.<br />
