Chapter 5: Methodology<br />

5.1 Introduction<br />

This chapter def<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> methodology used <strong>in</strong> this research. The<br />

chapter discusses <strong>in</strong> detail <strong>the</strong> methods applied and <strong>the</strong> rationale beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se methods. It also presents <strong>the</strong> research <strong>design</strong> and<br />

how it is implemented. Moreover, <strong>the</strong> chapter <strong>in</strong>cludes a discussion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> data collection methods that have been utilised <strong>in</strong> both its primary<br />

and secondary modes. It also presents <strong>the</strong> procedures and <strong>the</strong><br />

participants alongside <strong>the</strong> validity and reliability issues. It is shown that<br />

<strong>the</strong> research adapted a cyclic nature which resulted <strong>in</strong> three phases <strong>of</strong><br />

development; each phase is also described <strong>in</strong> this chapter <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> methods used. The chapter summarises <strong>the</strong> case studies carried<br />

out <strong>in</strong> this project, and also <strong>in</strong>cludes a synopsis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> curriculum<br />

developed <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>framework</strong> <strong>of</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g VDS <strong>in</strong> <strong>design</strong> education<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE.<br />

5.2 Research Methodology<br />

The research is based on an action research methodology. Greenwood<br />

and Lev<strong>in</strong> 242 def<strong>in</strong>e action research as a series <strong>of</strong> collaborative ef<strong>for</strong>ts<br />

and strategies to generate knowledge <strong>in</strong> a certa<strong>in</strong> subject area and<br />

<strong>design</strong> action based on feedback with <strong>the</strong> aim to develop<strong>in</strong>g dramatic<br />

change. This research aims to <strong>in</strong>itiate a change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> architectural<br />

<strong>design</strong> <strong>studio</strong> practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE by <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g VDS to promote new<br />

skills. S<strong>in</strong>ce this research considers modify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> <strong>studio</strong><br />

curriculum to accommodate new technology, action research is a tool<br />

agreed on by researchers 243 . Elliot 244 , draws on his previous<br />

experiences as a teacher, states that action research emerged as a tool<br />
