Solv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>design</strong> problems thus requires both methods <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. De<br />

Bono uses <strong>the</strong> symbol <strong>of</strong> hats to tackle each situation us<strong>in</strong>g creativity<br />

where each hat represents a certa<strong>in</strong> way <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><br />

situation <strong>in</strong> hand. While Cooper 191 claims that <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> metaphor <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>design</strong> is limit<strong>in</strong>g and can harm <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> product. O<strong>the</strong>rs 192,193 assert<br />

that its use can help <strong>design</strong>ers to understand complicated <strong>design</strong><br />

situations, th<strong>in</strong>k unconventionally, and encourage <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong><br />

novel <strong>design</strong> ideas. Burke 194 def<strong>in</strong>es metaphor as “a mechanism that<br />

enables its user to see th<strong>in</strong>gs to represent o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs. It br<strong>in</strong>gs out <strong>the</strong><br />

thisness <strong>of</strong> that or <strong>the</strong> thatness <strong>of</strong> this”. Lak<strong>of</strong>f and Johnson 195 relate<br />

metaphors to our cognitive system:<br />

“Our conceptual system … is fundamentally metaphoric <strong>in</strong> nature”.<br />

They assert that metaphor is not just about language; it is a way <strong>of</strong><br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g “<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way that we conceptualise one doma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r”. 196 Us<strong>in</strong>g metaphors <strong>in</strong> <strong>design</strong> can help <strong>the</strong> student generate new<br />

and creative ideas and <strong>in</strong>novations. In a recent study, Casak<strong>in</strong> 197<br />

p<strong>in</strong>po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> metaphors and how it helps <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong>er to identify<br />

and capture <strong>design</strong> concepts, and establish <strong>the</strong>ir goals and<br />

requirements.<br />

“Metaphorical reason<strong>in</strong>g is an iterative process through which <strong>design</strong>ers<br />

gradually <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge <strong>of</strong> a <strong>design</strong> situation. Basically, <strong>the</strong><br />

use <strong>of</strong> metaphors aids <strong>in</strong> structur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>design</strong> problems” 198 .<br />
