About the Author Pat Southern studied for her BA Honours degree in Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of London External Department and went on to gain a Masters in Roman Frontier Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where she also worked for several years as librarian in the Department of Arch aeo l ogy. She has publ i s h ed several books on Roman them e s , i n cluding Th e Roman Cava l ry and The Late Roman Army, both co - a ut h ored with Ka ren R Di xon . She then produ ced bi ogra phies of the Emperor Dom i ti a n , Au g u s tu s , Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, and Pompey the Great, followed by her latest book examining the problems of the third century ad in The Roman Empire From Severus to Constantine (Routledge 2001). She still works as a librarian and is a committed Roman army enthusiast. 383
