4.7 The <strong>on</strong>ly significant increase in capacity has been provided by <strong>Thames</strong> Craft<br />

Dry Docking Services Ltd. At Greenwich. In 2004 <strong>the</strong> firm installed a new floating<br />

dry dock that is 58.5 metres l<strong>on</strong>g x 14.5 metres wide that is capable <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lifting vessels<br />

up to 1600 t<strong>on</strong>nes. A larger dry dock that is capable <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> docking <strong>the</strong> largest <strong>Thames</strong><br />

passenger boat is moored downriver, awaiting <strong>the</strong> proposed relocati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Thames</strong><br />

Craft Dry Docking Services Ltd. to Bay Wharf.<br />

Lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> facilities for emergency repair<br />

4.8 There is a lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> facilities for emergency repairs to rudders etc. This is<br />

particularly so in Central L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> where most passenger boats operate. Boat<br />

operators overcome this problem by beaching vessels at low tide in Central L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong><br />

or using <strong>the</strong> hard at Putney for emergency repairs.<br />

Use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> facilities outside Greater L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong><br />

4.9 There are inadequate facilities within L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> to meet all <strong>the</strong> needs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vessel<br />

operators. This is particularly so for <strong>the</strong> larger catamaran type passenger vessels and<br />

for piers and p<strong>on</strong>to<strong>on</strong>s. The key facilities are listed in Table 2.2. George Prior at<br />

Ipswich has closed since <strong>the</strong> last study and A & P Ramsgate has g<strong>on</strong>e into liquidati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Acorn Shipyard Rochester is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> few commercial uses to survive in a<br />

residential – led Rochester <strong>River</strong>side scheme and Dent<strong>on</strong> Ship Repair is subject to<br />

residential proposals by Gravesham Borough Council <strong>on</strong> both sides <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> slipway.<br />

4.10 The <strong>Thames</strong> passenger boat operators seek to avoid using East Coast yards<br />

if <strong>the</strong>y can because <strong>the</strong>ir vessels are not designed for coastal voyages. There is a<br />

danger <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> becoming wea<strong>the</strong>r bound or sustaining damage during <strong>the</strong>se trips (<strong>the</strong><br />

Dixie Queen was damaged <strong>on</strong> an East Coast passage recently).<br />

4.11 Given <strong>the</strong> threats to boatyards outside L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mayor</strong>’s objectives in<br />

<strong>the</strong> L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> Plan to accommodate L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>’s growth in sustainable ways, it is<br />

appropriate to c<strong>on</strong>sider whe<strong>the</strong>r a greater proporti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>’s need for boat<br />

maintenance can be undertaken within Greater L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>. We report <strong>on</strong> potential sites<br />

in Secti<strong>on</strong> 5.<br />

Public sector requirements<br />

4.12 The biggest marine workshop in L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> numbers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> employees<br />

is provided by Transport for L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> and operated by Greenwich Council to maintain<br />

<strong>the</strong> three Woolwich ferries. TfL also has a significant requirement to maintain piers<br />

and linkspans <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Thames</strong>. O<strong>the</strong>r public bodies operating vessels <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>River</strong><br />

<strong>Thames</strong> include <strong>the</strong> <strong>River</strong> Police, <strong>the</strong> L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> Fire Brigade and <strong>the</strong> PLA. In additi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> RNLI, a voluntary organisati<strong>on</strong>, operates inshore rescue boats from three lifeboat<br />

stati<strong>on</strong>s in L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Operati<strong>on</strong>al changes in some passenger boat fleets<br />

4.13 Traditi<strong>on</strong>ally, <strong>Thames</strong> passenger boats have been operated by watermenbased<br />

companies that have taken resp<strong>on</strong>sibility for marketing <strong>the</strong>ir services, and <strong>the</strong><br />

funding and operati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>ir boats. In some instances <strong>the</strong> firms have also<br />

undertaken repair and maintenance. This pattern remains <strong>the</strong> predominant business<br />

model today. However, entertainment groups are now investing in some operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

to ensure that <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> appropriate quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vessels to serve <strong>the</strong>ir visitor<br />

attracti<strong>on</strong>s. The Tussauds Group has bought <strong>the</strong> Silver B<strong>on</strong>ito from Woods <strong>River</strong><br />

Cruises who will c<strong>on</strong>tinue to operate <strong>the</strong> vessel. The Silver B<strong>on</strong>ito will c<strong>on</strong>tinue to<br />
