Planning and envir<strong>on</strong>mental health issues<br />

An applicati<strong>on</strong> for retrospective planning permissi<strong>on</strong> is to be made for <strong>the</strong><br />

rec<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> three grids <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> former SPL site.<br />

Stardale Ltd. had drawn up proposals for a seven storey block <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> flats <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> site<br />

above a retained boatyard and a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> storeys <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> car parking. These proposals<br />

are not being pursued currently.<br />

Relati<strong>on</strong>ship to adjoining land uses<br />

Brentford Dock <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> south side <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> boatyard has been redeveloped for<br />

residential use. These neighbours are generally supportive <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> boatyard activities.<br />

Access arrangements<br />

Road access is via Dock Road that is a private road forming part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Brentford Dock<br />

development. It is <strong>on</strong>ly possible to bring in small boats into Dock Road up to 5 t<strong>on</strong>s<br />

that are launched with <strong>the</strong> crane barge.<br />

Comments (2007)<br />

This is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly three boatbuilding yards in Greater L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>. The firm has acquired<br />

a lease <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> former SPL site form British Waterways. The firm has also acquired a<br />

lease <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> disused dry dock <strong>on</strong> Johns<strong>on</strong>’s Island from British Waterways and<br />

intends to bring it back into use.<br />

Stardale has a l<strong>on</strong>g lease <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> site that was obtained to pursue a scheme for<br />

residential flats <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> site (such a use would be c<strong>on</strong>trary to LB Hounslow planning<br />

policy). This is <strong>the</strong> largest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> three sites occupied by MSO and was previously<br />

used for tug and barge building and repairs by EC J<strong>on</strong>es, The buildings <strong>on</strong> Site 1 are<br />

in poor c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> and MSO Marine services wants to upgrade <strong>the</strong>m but as <strong>the</strong> lease<br />

from Stardale Ltd. expires in June 2007 it is not viable to do so.<br />
