densely scaled. Caudal fin densely scaled. In<br />
smallest specimen, 62.1 mm SL, pectoral and<br />
pelvic fins naked, anal fin scaled basally, caudal<br />
fin scaled only up to half of fin.<br />
Colouration in preservative. Young 62.1 mm SL<br />
(Fig. 60) with dorsum brownish, nape and snout<br />
pale brownish, side greyish, ventrally white. Chest<br />
silvery. Brown horizontal band from eye across<br />
opercle, continued along midaxis of side to caudal<br />
fin base, more distinct posteriorly than anteriorly,<br />
continuous with caudal base spot, and extended<br />
on middle caudal fin rays to end of caudal<br />
fin. Horizontal band crossed by three (four on left<br />
side, one bar interspersed anterior to third bar of<br />
right side) horizontal brownish vertical bars, from<br />
slightly above level of upper lateral line to level<br />
of lower margin of pectoral fin base. Indistinct<br />
light spots marginal to horizontal band dorsally<br />
and ventrally. Spinous portion of dorsal fin grey-<br />
ish with light band along middle of fin; soft<br />
dorsal fin basally dusky, followed in succession<br />
by grey band, hyaline band and wide dusky<br />
margin. Anal fin hyaline. Brown spot at base of<br />
caudal fin contiguous with horizontal band on<br />
side and dark pigment caudally on caudal fin,<br />
margined by light elongate blotches dorsally and<br />
ventrally. Pelvic fin whitish.<br />
Specimen 114.7 mm SL (Fig. 61) with incipient<br />
ocellated blotch below soft dorsal fin. Faint dark<br />
band from snout tip to caudal fin, and faint dark<br />
vertical bars (bars 1-3) across middle of side. A<br />
few light spots on side of head. Large round light<br />
spots on side; one horizontal row dorsally and<br />
one row ventrally along horizontal band, a few<br />
spots along abdominal side and one horizontal<br />
row on dorsal side. Two rows of light spots on<br />
spinous dorsal fin. Two rows of contiguous yellowish<br />
spots crossing soft dorsal fin. Anal fin<br />
hyaline. Dark blotch at dorsal caudal fin base<br />
