1 Bfi LA PSICOLOGIA DE LOS OBJETOS COTIDIANOS revolución del teclado. Millones de personas tendrían que aprender una forma nueva de escribir a máquina. Habría que cambiar un número interminable de máquinas de escribir. <strong>La</strong>s grandes limitaciones de la práctica existente impiden el cambio, incluso cuando el cambio es para mejorar 7 . ¿No podríamos, por lo menos, funcionar mejor con las dos manos a la vez? Sí, es posible. Los estenógrafos de tribunales escriben mecánicamente a mayor velocidad que nadie. Utilizan teclados de acordes, que imprimen sílabas directamente en la página: sílabas, no letras. Los teclados de acordes tienen muy pocas teclas: pueden tener sólo cinco o seis, pero por lo general tienen entre diez y quince. Muchos de los teclados de acordes permiten escribir letras solas o palabras enteras con una pulsación de la mano en varias teclas. Si se utilizan los diez dedos al mismo tiempo, hay 1.023 combinaciones posibles. Con eso basta para todas las letras y todos los números, las mayúsculas y las minúsculas, más un montón de palabras, con tal de que se puedan aprender las pautas establecidas. Los teclados de acordes tienen una desventaja terrible: son muy difíciles de aprender y muy difíciles de recordar; todo el conocimiento tiene que estar en la cabeza. Si se enfrenta uno con un teclado normal, se puede utilizar inmediatamente. Basta con buscar la letra que se desea y pulsar la tecla. Con los teclados de acordes hay que pulsar varias teclas al mismo tiempo. No hay forma de poner una etiqueta adecuada a las teclas ni forma de aprender lo que se ha de hacer con sólo mirar. Algunos teclados de acordes son increíblemente astutos y notablemente fáciles de aprender, dentro de su complicación. Yo he tratado de aprender uno de los más fáciles. Al cabo de treinta minutos de práctica ya conocía el alfabeto. Pero si no utilizaba el teclado en una semana, se me olvidaban los acordes. No parecía que esa ventaja mereciera la pena el esfuerzo. ¿Qué pasa con los teclados de acordes de una sola mano? ¿No merecería la pena invertir mucho tiempo y esfuerzo para aprender a escribir con una sola mano? Quizá, si aspira uno a pilotar un avión a reacción con una mano y quiere introducir datos en un ordenador con la otra. Pero para el público en general, no 8 . Todo ello nos enseña una lección importante en materia de diseño. Una vez conseguido un producto satisfactorio, la introducción de cambios puede ser contraproducente, especialmente si el producto tiene éxito. Hay que saber cuándo detenerse.
6.3. Productos con teclados alfabéticos. Aunque varios experimentos demuestran que no valen de nada para los novicios y son malos para los expertos, todos los años los diseñadores se lanzan y nos imponen otro teclado alfabético. Aunque se logre aprender uno, nunca se aprende cómo utilizar todos los teclados diferentes que hay.
