Photography: Peter De Mulder a parisian of Greek origin, I came to Brussels 10 years ago. I fi nd it far more accessible and less solitary than Paris. For me, this city has all the advantages of a capital without any of the inconveniences. The canal is the place that strikes the most powerful chord for me here. I think it’s the most perfect representation of Brussels and the melancholy that sometimes pervades it. To reach it I take rue Antoine Dansaert from la Place de la Bourse, and go up towards Café Walvis at 209, from whose terrace you can look onto the disused yet beautiful Bellevue factory. I enjoy walking along the canal-side, a forlorn area whose greyness touches me. I like to sew, and oft en pop by the Chien Vert fabric shop (2 rue du Chien Vert) – it has a wonderful selection of beautiful materials. It’s no accident the main character in my recent short fi lm, Rafi , is an old Greek seamstress living in Brussels. Cette ville à une dimension plus humaine, je m’y sens moins anonyme. Bruxelles a les avantages d’une capitale sans les inconvénients. Le lieu qui me touche c’est le canal. Mélancolique et pas aménagé du tout, il est le portrait de la capitale Pour y accéder je prends la rue Dansaert depuis la Place de la Bourse et je remonte jusqu’au Café Walvis au numéro 209, dont la terrace off re une vue sur l’usine Bellevue qui est à l’abandon, mais que je trouve jolie. J’aime me promener le long de ce canal dont le petit côté gris m’attendrit. Comme je fais de la couture, je passe souvent au Chien Vert (2 rue du chien vert) un beau magasin de tissus qui off re un joli éventail de tissus. Ce n’est certainement pas une coïncidence si l’un des personnages de mon récent court métrage Rafi est une vieille couturière grecque qui vit à Bruxelles.
