having secured the royal seal of approval with appearances by the two dashing Windsor boys, Coworth Park has become the place for the London set to gather for polo. Just one hour from the capital, this rural outpost of the Dorchester sits in 240 acres of lush English countryside, a dignifi ed Georgian manor turned luxury hotel and spa. Coworth Park has cleverly managed to reinvent the English country house experience by blending tradition with cutting-edge design and technology, resulting in a quirky, interesting and comfortable rural escape. Fireplaces made of smashed tiles and smoked oak fl oors are complemented by leather-covered banisters, a muted palette of earthy hues and luxe furnishings in wool, linen and cashmere. Huge bedrooms with soaring ceilings off er marble bathrooms, under-fl oor heating and giant retracting television screens. The centrepiece four-poster bed fashioned into the bending limbs of trees provides echoes of the surrounding woodlands. Wonderfully, eccentrically English yes; stuff y and dull, no. For outdoorsy types, an early morning trek around the estate is a spirit-lift ing experience, but the more ambitious can take a crack at polo on one of the estate’s two pitches. It’s a place to relax and get muddy if you want to, and then return to a three-footdeep copper bath, followed by an eight-course tasting menu amid the peachy copper tones of the John Campbell restaurant. If more relaxing pursuits appeal, the purpose-built spa sits privately in a grassy hollow, off ering an array of restorative treatments, such as the blissful Lavender Field of Dreams exfoliation and massage, using herbs from the hotel garden. Most soothing of all is the blue infi nity pool that plays classical music underwater, where you really can lose yourself for a while. Rooms from £235 per night including breakfast; Lavender Field of Dreams spa treatment, £120. Coworth Park, Blacknest Road, Ascot, Berkshire SL5, coworthpark.com ~ insider travel ~ the weekender: coworth park Just an hour outside London, the Dorchester’s rural incarnation offers the country house experience reinvented.
