Illustration: Gary Neill kate spicer When trash becomes fash long ago Jean-Paul Gaultier once eulogised the robust provincial English female out on the town. He said he liked the style of the confi dent small-town girl, with her eyes caked in kohl and her body bulging out of an inappropriate miniskirt. How novel and slightly unPC, everyone thought at the time, while waving desperately “over here, over here” to draw the man’s attention to our preferred style icons, like Kate Moss and the Queen. Ten years on and clearly J-PG was so ahead of the curve that one can only assume he is not just the oldest enfant terrible in the world, but also possibly clairvoyant. London’s red carpets are fi lling up with out-of-towners of dubious heritage. And the less-than-refi ned lady is actually in vogue. The imperious fashion bible recently shot Amy Childs, a beautician and “model” who possesses every possible signifi er of what the capital’s taste elite likes to tut at: gel nails, a permanent pout, big “toy” breasts, a liberal hosing of fake tan and several pairs of false eyelashes. Childs is one of several young ladies who make up the cast of The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE), an American-style “reality soap” starring real people in scripted storylines based on their own lives. The weird hall of mirrors that is the reality soap has produced other shows set in upscale neighbourhoods like Chelsea and Notting Hill, but only the Essex mob have produced a hit. The Essex Girl’s habits are contagious. Having introduced London to vajazzling – the decorating of waxed pudenda with crystals – the TOWIE girls are launching a fashion line in the autumn. Vogue is quite the class warrior when it comes to breaking down the barriers. Readers gasped when they did Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham and Cheryl Cole, and a selection of less talented footballer’s wives. They were choking by the time Vogue profi led the bazooka-breasted glamour model called Jordan, who has, among many other things, an equestrian line under her real name of Katie Price. The elite has been fully penetrated by the sort of women that used to be the subject of mockery. All we need is for one of them to marry Prince Harry, and there will be a genuine claim to a revolution of sorts; less off with their heads, more, on with the vajazzle. God Save vajazzling ! Kate Spicer écrit pour le Sunday Times Style.
