with her doe eyes peeking out from under a heavy chestnut
fringe and those breathless, sexy cut-glass vowels, used to
such erotic eff ect on Je t’aime… moi non plus, Jane Birkin was
the quintessential English rose. She captured the heart of that
salty old dog Serge Gainsbourg, becoming his lover and muse,
and her fatal combination of angelic looks and butter-melting
sultriness also entranced her other husbands, the late
composer John Barry and fi lm director Jacques Doillon.
She abandoned the Swinging Sixties London of Antonioni’s
Blow-Up (she starred in the threesome studio scene with
David Hemmings) for a suitably bohemian life in Paris.
Mother to three beautiful, ultra-cool daughters, Kate Barry,
Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, Birkin had an iconic
Hermès bag named aft er her way before naming products
aft er celebrities was common, and parfumier Miller Harris
also created L’Air de rien, a startlingly unique fragrance,
especially for her.
Only Françoise Hardy can rival Birkin in making double
denim look so desirable, and in Breton stripes she was then,
and is still, an infl uence upon a new generation of hipsters
such as Alexa Chung and Edie Campbell, a modern-day
reincarnation of Birkin circa 1966 if ever there was one.

d’érotisme torride n’a pas manqué de séduire ses autres
maris, feu le compositeur John Barry et le réalisateur
Jacques Doillon.
Elle abandonne le Londres des Swinging Sixties du
Blow-Up d’Antonioni (rappelez-vous de la scène du
ménage à trois avec David Hemmings) pour une vie
bohème à Paris, où elle élèvera trois fi lles branchées, Kate
Barry, Charlotte Gainsbourg et Lou Doillon. Hermès lui
crée un sac (bien avant que cette pratique ne devienne
à la mode) et le parfumeur Miller Harris, une fragrance
unique, L’Air de rien.
Seule Françoise Hardy porte aussi bien le total look
jeans. Avec ses rayures bretonnes, le look Birkin a
infl uencé et continue d’infl uencer une nouvelle génération
de fi gures de la branchitude telles qu’Alexa Chung et Edie
Campbell, réincarnation contemporaine parfaite de la
Jane de 1966.
