Aglepristone will be the safer and most effective drug to terminate pregnancy
at this early stage. However, when a large or giant-sized bitch is concerned,
due to the relatively high cost of the drug, veterinarians will have to
discuss with the owners about the benefit-risk ratio of treating the bitch at once
or waiting until the pregnancy diagnosis becomes possible.
The earlier the abortive protocol using aglepristone is performed, the better
the efficacy is. Studies conducted on a large scale have shown that aglepristone
administered twice at 24 hours interval before day 21 ensures an efficacy
of 99.6% (Lennoz 2006).
Therefore, when aborted at an early stage, it does not appear necessary to
perform a further confirmation of pregnancy termination by ultrasound after
day 25 – day 30. Use of PGF2α.
PGF2α are poorly efficacious before days 15 to 25 of pregnancy.
2.2.3. The bitch is brought to consultation
at mid-pregnancy
(Day 22 to Day 40 after mating)
The main advantage of acting later in pregnancy is that only bitches which
are really pregnant will undergo an abortive protocol. This will save money
for the owners and avoid side effects when medical treatments happen to be
unnecessary.
Therefore the first step is to control whether the bitch is pregnant.
A surgical ovariectomy will be abortive in 100% of the cases but the sudden
removal of ovaries bears a high risk of inducing lactation.
Use of aglepristone
The abortive efficacy of aglepristone at mid-pregnancy is good, although
slightly lower than at an earlier stage. Depending on the publications, it varies
between 94.4 to 96.2%. Prolific bitches may be more predisposed to develop
only a partial abortion at this later stage than when treated earlier in pregnancy.
In the case of failure (partial abortion or incomplete uterine emptying), it
is recommended to hospitalize the bitch and to begin a second course of aglepristone,
in association with PGF2α injections.
