1. RISK FACTORS LEADING TO CAESAREAN SECTION<br />
Caesarean section is very anxiogenic for owners and vet. The morbidity<br />
rate of pups <strong>in</strong>creases proportionally with the duration of dystocia.<br />
To limit the morbidity of the bitch and her fetus, it is important to identify<br />
risk factors lead<strong>in</strong>g to dystocia and to propose C-section neither too early<br />
nor too late:<br />
- Breeds: Boston terrier, bulldog, French bulldog, mastiff, Scottish terrier,<br />
m<strong>in</strong>iature bull terrier, German wirehaired po<strong>in</strong>ter, Clumber spaniel,<br />
Pek<strong>in</strong>gese and Dandie D<strong>in</strong>mont terrier. In the Boston terrier, bulldog and<br />
French bulldog, the rate was > 80%<br />
- Nulliparous over 6 years old<br />
- < 3 puppies; > 8-12 puppies (depend<strong>in</strong>g breeds)<br />
- History of uter<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>ertia (not l<strong>in</strong>ked to foetus malposition)<br />
- Lack of emergency veter<strong>in</strong>ary facilities <strong>in</strong> the area (less than 40 m<strong>in</strong>utes)<br />
- History of uter<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>ertia (not l<strong>in</strong>ked to foetus malposition) <strong>in</strong> the l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
- Dog suffer<strong>in</strong>g from a metabolic disorder <strong>in</strong> late pregnancy (eclampsia,<br />
hypoglycemia)<br />
- Anatomical abnormality of the vag<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong>compatible with (stenosis, ...).<br />
- Fetal monstrosity (diagnosed <strong>in</strong> late pregnancy): fetal hydrops ...<br />
- Fetal Malposition / malpresentation nonreducible<br />
- Fetal distress HR
