1. RISK FACTORS LEADING TO CAESAREAN SECTION
Caesarean section is very anxiogenic for owners and vet. The morbidity
rate of pups increases proportionally with the duration of dystocia.
To limit the morbidity of the bitch and her fetus, it is important to identify
risk factors leading to dystocia and to propose C-section neither too early
nor too late:
- Breeds: Boston terrier, bulldog, French bulldog, mastiff, Scottish terrier,
miniature bull terrier, German wirehaired pointer, Clumber spaniel,
Pekingese and Dandie Dinmont terrier. In the Boston terrier, bulldog and
French bulldog, the rate was > 80%
- Nulliparous over 6 years old
- < 3 puppies; > 8-12 puppies (depending breeds)
- History of uterine inertia (not linked to foetus malposition)
- Lack of emergency veterinary facilities in the area (less than 40 minutes)
- History of uterine inertia (not linked to foetus malposition) in the line
- Dog suffering from a metabolic disorder in late pregnancy (eclampsia,
hypoglycemia)
- Anatomical abnormality of the vagina incompatible with (stenosis, ...).
- Fetal monstrosity (diagnosed in late pregnancy): fetal hydrops ...
- Fetal Malposition / malpresentation nonreducible
- Fetal distress HR
