dell’automotive.<br />

Se nel corso degli ultimi vent’anni<br />

Autostrada del Brennero ha<br />

più che dimezzato il tasso di incidentalità<br />

globale il merito è di<br />

un’azione condotta a 360 gradi<br />

dalla concessionaria per incrementare<br />

la sicurezza dell’arteria<br />

e dei viaggiatori, che passa da<br />

investimenti costanti ed elevati<br />

in manutenzioni alla programmazione<br />

oculata dei lavori fino<br />

alla scelta di materiali, come l’asfalto<br />

fonoassorbente e i sicurvia<br />

in Cor-ten. Nel tempo la curva<br />

si è appiattita perché deve fare i<br />

conti con una causa incomprimibile<br />

degli incidenti, ossia il fattore<br />

umano. Per poter incidere anche<br />

su questo elemento del calcolo<br />

la via da percorrere è quella della<br />

guida autonoma, che rappresenta,<br />

a tutti gli effetti, il futuro<br />

della mobilità. Il settore dell’automotive<br />

ha già abbracciato con convinzione la<br />

sfida, producendo veicoli capaci di guidarsi quasi<br />

da soli grazie a sensori (radar, telecamere, lidar)<br />

sempre più sofisticati e precisi, i cui dati<br />

vengono elaborati in tempo reale da una Intelligenza<br />

Artificiale in grado di prendere decisioni<br />

in scenari differenti. Ma le strade e le autostrade<br />

a che punto sono? Perché infatti auto e camion<br />

smart possano esprimere tutte le loro potenzialità<br />

è necessario che le infrastrutture viarie siano<br />

attrezzate con una tecnologia adeguata a dialogare<br />

con loro.<br />

Progetti di ricerca internazionali<br />

Autostrada del Brennero, la Società che gestisce<br />

i 314 chilometri dell’A22, ha iniziato a percorre-<br />

FALLEN BY MORE THAN 30 POINTS SINCE 2001. IN 2022,<br />

THE COMPANY ACHIEVED A RECORD FIGURE OF 14.81<br />

POINTS, HALF THE NATIONAL AVERAGE OF 27.04<br />

The merit for this is an all-round effort by the company<br />

to increase the safety of the road and those using it by<br />

means of constant high investment in maintenance, careful<br />

planning of work and choice of materials, such as<br />

sound-absorbing asphalt and Corten safety barriers.<br />

Over time, the curve has flattened because it has to<br />

cope with a cause of accidents which is very difficult<br />

to reduce, namely the human factor. Impacting on this<br />

element in the equation means self-driving cars which<br />

is, to all intents and purposes, the future of transport.<br />

The automotive sector has already taken up the gauntlet,<br />

producing vehicles capable of virtually driving<br />

themselves thanks to increasingly sophisticated and<br />

precise sensors (radar, cameras, lidar) whose data are<br />

processed in real time by Artificial Intelligence capable<br />

of making decisions in diverse scenarios. But what<br />

point are we at with roads and motorways? For smart<br />

cars and trucks to reach their full potential, road infrastructure<br />

must be equipped with appropriate technology<br />

capable of communicating with them.<br />

Autostrada del Brennero, the company managing the<br />

314 kilometres of the A22, has been pursuing this for<br />

years now, joining and leading numerous international<br />

research projects in the field, including C-Roads Italy,<br />

coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure<br />

and Transport (MIT) and co-funded by the European<br />

Commission. Its third edition ended in December 2023<br />

and saw Autobrennero implement and supplement the<br />

work done with C-Roads Italy. From the outset, the<br />

project aimed to study and then test C-ITS (Cooperative<br />

Intelligent Transport Systems) under real traffic<br />

conditions. It is a Copernican revolution in traffic management:<br />

the one-to-one relationship between the traffic<br />

control centre, called CAU (User Assistance Centre)<br />

in the case of the A22, which sends information to variable<br />

message signs, in particular, is gradually being<br />

supplemented by a C-ITS infrastructure which enables<br />

communication primarily between infrastructure and<br />

vehicles (I2V), but also between vehicles and infrastructure<br />

(V2I). The axis around which this important<br />

transformation revolves is georeferencing. That<br />

is, in contrast with the past, the information that vehicles<br />

and roads send to one another is constantly updated<br />

and geolocalised, with the entire road mapped in<br />

real time. The expected positive effects are manifold:<br />

knowing the speed vehicles on the road are travelling<br />

at, traffic conditions at each point and the volume of<br />

cars and trucks present at all times makes regulating<br />

traffic flows and speeds, increasing motorway capacity,<br />

reducing stop&go phenomena and consequently<br />

lowering the road’s accident rates and emission impact<br />

on the environment. In C-Roads Italy, Autostrada del<br />

Brennero developed and implemented the entire basic<br />

infrastructure underlying this, drawing up the specifications,<br />

creating a C-ITS server and equipping the<br />
