64 Fortid 1/12 Tunisia var først ute i regionen av flere grunner. Av de øknomiske årsakene bør en vektlegge den skjeve fordelingen av godene, deler av landet uten livsviktig infrastruktur, stor arbeidsledighet blandt de unge, og et lønnsnivå i disse områdene langt under landets gjennomsnitt. Selve regimet bør også ta sin del av skylden, med sin økende synlige nepotisme. Til slutt bør en også kunne vektlegge personligheter som Ben Ammar og Seriati, for ikke å glemme Ben Ali selv, da han jo dro ut av landet kun få dager etter at demonstrasjonene hadde nådd hovedstaden. Dette reddet landet fra de blodbad en har sett i de andre arabiske landene i det siste. Fremtiden: demokrati med islamsk vri eller retur til diktatur light? Både Brownlee 29 og Hadenius/Teorell 30 konstaterte, ved å undersøke i underkant av 200 regimesammenbrudd, at det var en sammenheng mellom innføring av demokratiske institusjoner før regimesammenbruddet og demokratisering etter regimets sammenbrudd. Tunisia hadde siden 1980-tallet parlaments og lokalvalg hvor flere politiske partier deltok, og selv om disse institusjonene ikke hadde makten de var ment å skulle ha, viser det seg at innføringen av slike innstitusjoner fører til en lettere overgang til demokrati etter regime sammenbrudd. Når institusjonene eksisterer blir overgangsmyndighetenes oppgave så å flytte maktsentrumet hit, etter å ha tatt ett oppgjør med antidemokratiske sirkler som eksisterte under det tidligere regimet. Selv om Tunisia ikke har hatt en rekonsiliasjonsprosess på linje med Sør-Afrika, har en korrupsjonskomite jobbet siden 13. januar 2011 og over 500 saker kommet opp i retten. 31 De har kommet gjennom halvparten av sakene, men ennå avventes mange av salene til de store politiskøknomiske elitene. Mange dommere er selv avsatt grunnet korrupsjon, og det er derfor normalt at det tar såpass lang tid å komme gjennom bunken av saker. Valget 23. oktober 2011 var det første demokratiske valget i landet noensinne, og her vant moderate islamister nesten halvparten av stemmene. 32 En samlingsregjering sammensatt av islamistpartiet og to andre partier vil nå sitte med makten inntil grunnloven er vedtatt. I løpet av det siste året er ytrings- og organisasjonsfriheten blitt såpass grunnfestet at det skal mye til for en regjering å kunne gjeninnføre noen form for diktatur. Enkelte analytikere sammenligner den nye bølgen med islamister med europeiske kristendemokrater, mens andre igjen ser autoritære tendenser og dermed mulighet for rask retur til en eller annen form for autoritært styre.
