North Sea on June 28th and the voyage continued northwards.
For Rostock-Jensen, it was the start of a real adventure. He had
joined the crew as a trainee, to learn from the seasoned mariners
and polar explorers, who filled the ship. For him it was a
kind of Grand Tour, which he should grow and learn from. And
he did. But it was a far cry from being the safe environment,
under the protection of the strong personalities on board that
he had expected. Quite the opposite. On the voyage home, he
had to take the lead himself and use everyday life in the Arctic
as a mentor.
The obstreperous engine had to be repaired constantly and,
since there was no wind for the first part of the voyage, they
did not move. Fortunately, the wind picked up from the south
and they made good time northwards under sail. After ten
days, Teddy arrived without any particular difficulties at the
trading company’s station in Cape Borlace-Warren. From here,
the dreadful condition of the engine prevented the ship from
company’s geographically extensive area. Rostock-Jensen
worked like a horse and soon he won the respect of the crew.
His meeting with the country made a great impression on him
and he wrote with enthusiasm of the wildlife and nature. The
hunting trips and the long hikes with the expedition’s journalist
and film photographer Kai R. Dahl and his heavy film equipment
filled many pages in the journal.
However, he did not only keep an eye on nature. He often made
critical or sceptical notes about the leaders’ conflict-averse way
of dealing with problems. With his physical and mental energy,
he did not flinch from any kind of hardship and it was apparent,
that he took the lead when it became clear on the voyage
home, that Teddy could not reach ice-free waters.
