– under the circumstances a comfortable place to stay, although
far from safe.
Rostock-Jensen decided it was important to prepare for the
worst – a long and dangerous stay on the drifting ice – and
therefore he let the men sew sleeping bags, build sleds and
equip one of the dinghies with runners so it could be used to
move the survival camp on to other ice floes. To be on the safe
side, he repaired Teddy’s rudder, which had been crushed by
pack ice.
On the night of October 19th, it suddenly started to creak under
‘Hotel Ice Floe’, as the deckhouse was called. The survival
camp’s “plot” had been split up into several “sub-plots”, as Rostock-Jensen
expressed it, and it was necessary to re-organise
the house and equipment.
The ice drifted south through Denmark Strait and midway
between Iceland and Greenland it changed course to the west.
The men on the ice saw an opportunity to reach land in East
Greenland and got ready to go towards west, when the time
came. Thanks to Rostock-Jensen’s planning, the castaways were
well prepared to continue. They had seven three-man sleeping
bags of musk-ox skins, seven sleds and the dinghy with runners.

After two months on the ice, the last spent drifting down
through the Denmark Strait, they sighted land and decided to
split up. They formed several groups and after great hardship,
each group got close to a couple of East Greenlandic villages,
where hunters with dog sleds rescued them.
Although this was the end of the expedition, Rostock-Jensen
continued his journal with great enthusiasm following his
meeting with the East Greenlanders. He wrote warmly about
the people who rescued the Teddy castaways and his gratitude
and admiration clearly shows in his writing. He had never before
experienced such hospitality. The people of Utoqqarmiut
and Kulusuk did not have much, but they shared what they did
have.
The following summer, the crew returned to Denmark where
the expedition received a hero’s welcome and the conflict of
competence and the captain’s irresponsibility were dealt with
discretely during the inquiry and by the press. Kai Dahl’s film,
Teddy was shown in all the cinemas and it was a great success.
Several of those who had been shipwrecked, primarily Rostock-
Jensen, held lectures about the dramatic events in the Arctic
Ocean.
