Isbjerge med store huller er ofte et<br />
syn helt <strong>for</strong> sig <strong>se</strong>lv. Men hvordan<br />
dannes dis<strong>se</strong> huller?<br />
Udhulningen begynder, hvor der n<strong>at</strong>urligt er<br />
en <strong>for</strong>dybning i i<strong>se</strong>n, eller hvor i<strong>se</strong>n er mindre<br />
kompakt, <strong>for</strong>di den har luftblærer eller er<br />
mindre komprimeret end den omgivende is.<br />
Denne type is er skrøbelig og dermed nemmere<br />
<strong>for</strong> havet <strong>at</strong> erodere bort.<br />
Om sommeren kan udhulningen også begynde<br />
et sted, hvor i<strong>se</strong>n er lidt mørkere og<br />
der<strong>for</strong> hurtigere bliver varm og smelter, når<br />
solen skinner.<br />
Når der først er opstået en <strong>for</strong>dybning nær<br />
vandlinjen, så går proces<strong>se</strong>n <strong>for</strong>holdsvist<br />
hurtigt. Fordybningen foku<strong>se</strong>rer nemlig<br />
bølgeslaget, som en smal fjord foku<strong>se</strong>rer<br />
tidevandet. Når bølgerne på den måde får<br />
koncentreret kraften, afleverer de størstedelen<br />
af deres energi i bunden af <strong>for</strong>dybningen,<br />
som der<strong>for</strong> bliver dybere og dybere. Til sidst<br />
har bølgerne gravet en gang hele vejen igennem<br />
isbjerget, og hullet er dannet.<br />
Why holes?<br />
Icebergs with big holes are often a<br />
very special sight. But how are the<strong>se</strong><br />
holes <strong>for</strong>med?<br />
Hollowing out begins, w<strong>her</strong>e t<strong>her</strong>e is a n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />
depression in the ice, or w<strong>her</strong>e the ice is<br />
less den<strong>se</strong>, becau<strong>se</strong> t<strong>her</strong>e are air bubbles or<br />
it is less compres<strong>se</strong>d than the surrounding<br />
ice. This type of ice is fragile and easier <strong>for</strong><br />
the <strong>se</strong>a to erode.<br />
In the summer, the hollowing out can also<br />
start in a place w<strong>her</strong>e the ice is darker and<br />
t<strong>her</strong>e<strong>for</strong>e quicker to become warm and melt,<br />
when the sun shines.<br />
Once t<strong>her</strong>e is an indent<strong>at</strong>ion near the w<strong>at</strong>er<br />
line, the whole process moves rel<strong>at</strong>ively<br />
quickly. The indent<strong>at</strong>ion focu<strong>se</strong>s the waves<br />
in the same way a narrow fjord focu<strong>se</strong>s the<br />
tide. When the power of the waves is concentr<strong>at</strong>ed,<br />
most of its energy is directed <strong>at</strong><br />
the bottom of the indent<strong>at</strong>ion, which t<strong>her</strong>e<strong>for</strong>e<br />
becomes deeper and deeper. In the end,<br />
the waves have dug a p<strong>at</strong>h all through the<br />
iceberg and thus a hole has been <strong>for</strong>med.<br />
