The majority of the species is known by the vulgar names of "cipó-escada <strong>de</strong> jaboti",<br />
cipó-escada <strong>de</strong> macaco" or simply "cipó-escada".<br />
Twenty thiee species weie re<strong>de</strong>scribed and discussed along with their respective geographic<br />
distributions and illustiated by the pictuies of the types.<br />
A dicotomic key is piesented for the I<strong>de</strong>ntification of the mencioned species.<br />
The characters that showed a sistematic importance were the moiphology of the floral<br />
bud, the calyx, the petals, the bracteas, and in a lower <strong>de</strong>giee the leaf.<br />
The species studied are pèrfectly inserted in the genus Bauhinia, as belonging to the sect<br />
Tylotaea, in<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nt of the species of the sect SchneUa,<br />
