The area under study is located in the Northern region of<br />

the country, corresponding in the International World Map<br />

to the Millionth to Sheet NA.21 Tumucumaque and part of<br />

Sheet NB.21. It is mostly represented by lands in the State<br />

of Pare and small parts of the Federal Territories of Roraima<br />

and Amapä and the State of Amazonas. It is limited in<br />

the South by the equator, in the North by the Republic of<br />

Guiana, Surinam and French Guiana, and by the meridians<br />

54°00' and 60°00'W, covering an area of about 148,550 sq<br />

km.<br />

This report provides information about geomorphology,<br />

climate, geology, lithology, vegetation, the methodology<br />

employed in the survey, and criteria of the classification of<br />

soils;<br />

The survey is at an exploratory level and the following<br />

types of soils were identified: Distrophie Yellow Latosol,<br />

Distrophie Red-Yellow Latosol, Distrophie Dark Red Latosol,<br />

Eutrophic Dusky Red Latosol, Red-Yellow Podzolic.<br />

Distrophie Undifberentiated Concretionary Lateritic Soil,<br />

Distrophie Quartz Sand, Distrophie Ground Water Laterite,<br />

Distrophie Hydromorphic Gleyzed Soil, Eutrophic and Distrophie<br />

Alluvial, Distrophie Lithosol and Eutrophic Planosol.<br />

Data are also provided about the present use of agriculture,<br />

cattle raising, and plant extractive activities, as<br />

well as an evaluation of the agricultural suitability of soils<br />

under the systems of primitive and advanced management<br />

(non-irrigated).<br />

Two maps are enclosed, in the scale of 1:1,000,000, which<br />

are the exploratory map of soils and the map of agricultural<br />

suitability of soils.
