Sheet NA.21 Tumucumaque and part of Sheet NB.21 cover
an area of 14&.550 sq. km. and correspond to the sections
located between the parallels 00°00' and 04°00'N and the
meridians 54°00' and 60°00'W.
The present work, seeking to fulfill the aims of the
RADAMBRASIL Project, which is to make an assessment
of the potentialities of renewable natural resources for
planning in a regional scale — in the scale of 1:1.000.000 —
classifies and locates the vegetation groups, while trying
to evaluate the economic potential offered by the renewable
natural resources, especially the forest resources.
The main subsidy for the physiognomical interpretation of
the vegetation was provided by radar imagery and the
complementary details were obtained by resorting to other
sensors and to data collected in field work.
The study of vegetation was entirely based on Ellenberg's
ecological organization (Ellenberg & Mueller-Dombois,
1965-1966)

ABSTRACT
The following types of vegetation were found in the area:
Savanna, Steppe-Savanna, Pioneer Formations, Tropical
Forest, Open Forest, and Stational Semideciduous Forest,
besides the Refugia and the Ecological Tension Areas
(Contact Areas). The evaluation of the economic potential
of the forest cover was obtained through the samplings
located for the Forest Inventory, systematically distributed
throughout the delimited environments.
In the conclusive part of the present study, the focus is on
technical recommendations, based on conservational policies
that seek the rational arid above all economic utilization
of the forest resources. .-.;*
The main lumbering resources are also focused, with indications
as to their respective consummer markets.
Finally, in the appendix, there is a thematic synthesis of
sheets 1°00'x1°30', summarizing the main characteristics
of the areas and the physiognomical description of the
vegetation, and a statistical analysis of the data.
