Comparing these countries directly, we can see an immediate difference in the maturity and diversity of each country,
which demands differences in approach to optimising extraction of and exploration for hydrocarbons.
The scale of exploration activity and discovered volumes over the last decade can be seen in the following charts.
Exploration success in Norway has been much higher than the other countries, which is both due to its extent and its
remaining frontier areas, as well as remaining high activity levels. However, even in mature areas, exploration has been
successful, with the discoveries of Edvard Grieg and Johan Sverdrup in 2007 and 2010 respectively, for example.
The UK has still seen continued success with high activity, but much smaller volumes being discovered. This applies
even more so to The Netherlands. Denmark has been very unsuccessful in discovering significant commercial volumes,
although a number of difficult to develop technical discoveries have been made.
