Zeche mit Stil
»Schloss der Arbeit« nannten Zeitgenossen
diese wohl schönste
Zeche des Ruhrgebiets. Mit ihren
prunkvollen Backsteinfassaden
und opulenten Giebeln erinnert
die Anlage tatsächlich eher an
eine Adelsresidenz als an ein Bergwerk.
Kaum mehr vorstellbar ist
heute, dass das Ensemble nach der
Stilllegung in den 1960er-Jahren
abgerissen werden sollte. Wichtigstes
Objekt im Kampf um den
Erhalt war die Maschinenhalle mit
dem eindrucksvollen Jugendstilportal
– heute eine Ikone der Industriekultur.
Das über 100 Jahre alte
Gebäude wird zur Zeit saniert und
ist nur im Rahmen von Führungen
zugänglich. Die Dauerausstellung
des Museums macht die besondere
Lebenswelt der Bergleute und
ihrer Familien zwischen Schacht
und Kolonie lebendig. Junge
Besucher können sich im »Kinderkeller«,
einem Unter-Tage-Erlebnisraum,
austoben.

This is surely the most beautiful colliery
in the Ruhrgebiet. Contemporaries
called it a ”mansion of labour“,
and its splendid redbrick facades
and opulent gables are indeed more
reminiscent of an aristocratic mansion
than a coal mine. Today it is
very difficult to imagine that after
its closure in the 1960s this site was
once threatened with demolition.
The most important object in the
struggle to preserve the site was the
engine house with its impressive
Jugendstil entrance – now an icon
of industrial heritage. At the
moment the 100 year old building
is being restored. For this reason it
can only be visited on a guided tour.
The permanent exhibition in the
Museum illuminates the work and
lives of colliers and their families in
the mine and on their housing estates.
Young visitors can play to their
hearts content in the ”kids’ cellar“,
an underground adventure space.
