Lindenbrauerei
Bier im Revier –
Treibstoff der Industrie
Bier: ein Mythos im Ruhrgebiet.
Mit Kohle und Stahl bildete es
lange den historischen Dreiklang
der Region. Die Lindenbrauerei
gehört zu den traditionsreichsten
Braustätten des Reviers. Ab 1859
in mehreren Abschnitten erbaut,
wurden dort bis 1979 die bekannten
Linden-Biere gebraut. Nach
ihrer Schließung im Zuge wachsender
Konzentration in der Brauerei-Industrie
wandelte sich die
Lindenbrauerei zu einem Kunst-
und Kulturzentrum mit mehreren
Gastronomien. So blieben die
Erinnerungen an das Lindenpils
lebendige Geschichte. Unter Tage
jedoch, in den ehemaligen Kühlgewölben
der alten Braustätte,
öffnet sich eine geheimnisvolle
Welt aus Licht und Schatten.
Hier präsentiert das »Zentrum
für Internationale Lichtkunst«,
das im Mai 2001 eröffnet wurde,
Installationen u.a. von Mischa
Kuball, Christina Kubisch, Mario
Merz, François Morellet, Keith
Sonnier, Olafur Eliasson und
Rebecca Horn. Seit 2009 zeigt das
Zentrum ein neues, Aufsehen
erregendes Werk des US-amerikanischen
Lichtkünstlers James
Turrell. Zum vielfältigen Programmangebot
zählen außerdem
Symposien, Workshops und Wechselausstellungen
zum Thema Licht
sowie »Lichtreisen« ins Revier.
Oberirdisch bietet das Zentrum für
Information und Bildung (zib) ein
vielfältiges Kultur- und Bildungsangebot.
The region’s beer –
fuel for the workers
Beer is one of the myths of the
Ruhrgebiet along with coal and
steel. The Linden brewery is one
of the most traditional breweries
in the region. It was built in several
stages starting in 1859, and the
well-known Linden beer was
brewed here until 1979. As a result
of increasing mergers in the brewing
industry the brewery was then
closed down. It has now been transformed
into an arts centre with
several bars and restaurants. Thus
memories of Linden Pils are kept
alive. Below the surface, however,
a mysterious world of light and
shadows has sprung to life in the
old vaulted cellars. Here the
“Centre for International Light Art”
was opened in May 2001. Amongst
the installations are works by
artists including Mischa Kuball,
Christina Kubisch, Mario Merz,
François Morellet, Keith Sonnier,
Olafur Eliasson and Rebecca Horn.
Since 2009 the Centre presents
a new sensational work by the
North American light artist James
Turrell. The Centre offers a wide
range of programmes, symposia,
workshops and travelling exhibitions
on the theme of light, as well
as tours of other illuminations in
the area. At street level, the Centre
for Information and Education
(zib) offers a wide variety of artistic
and educational events and opportunities.
