Plattform zu geben. Ein immer noch schönes Kompliment,
dass auch ich gefragt wurde.
Und woher nehmen Sie Ihre Ideen für den Blog?
Ganz unterschiedlich.
Was aber fasziniert Sie
Aino Laberenz in »Stilvoll« sagt: »Ich denke manchmal,
»Following new paths with one’s style.«
Fashion is the great passion of Berlin fashion journalist Marlene Sørensen, who writes about style, beauty
and design in a variety of magazines. In addition to this work, she also writes for her own »spruced« blog. We
interviewed the fashion expert.
Ms. Sørensen, you studied journalism in London and now work as
a freelance writer for a number of fashion magazines. Has fashion
always been your great passion?
When I was 15 and my mum was still in charge of my clothes budget,
I wanted perilously high platform boots. I was convinced they would
automatically make me cooler. Luckily, my mum was wiser and refused
point blank to get them for me. I saved my pocket money for months
and bought them myself. If there’s any significance in this story, it’s
perhaps that even at an early age I regarded fashion as a promise of
more. And that I was willing to spend too much money on that.
The fashion business has many aspects, including many different
styles. How would you define your own style?
As a path to myself. It sounds esoteric, but even someone who
began with platform shoes can take new directions with his style
(and if that takes them back to those coveted platform shoes, which
are back in fashion).
That’s true. And fashions change depending on the season. Do you
always keep an eye on what’s trendy at the moment?
Yes, that’s one part of my job. But it is not key to the contents of
my wardrobe. What I find interesting are labels that do not perceive
fashion as seasonal goods, but rather focus on reduced, timeless
design that is not, however, boring.
You have your own successful blog called »spruced«, which is also
a partner site of the German edition of Vogue. How did that come
about?
A few years ago, VOGUE set up a network to offer a wider platform
to blogs that were a good match to the magazine. And it was
a nice compliment that they asked me to join it.
And where do you get your ideas for the blog from?
That varies. Sometimes I want to introduce a label to more people.
Sometimes I am cooperating with a brand. In some cases, I simply
want to present a product that I am enthusiastic about.
Your book, »Stilvoll«, is all about trends. What fascinates you most
about fashion?
I find it fascinating that a garment can improve someone’s mood in
just a few seconds and completely change their look.
And when someone does not know what style suits them? What
advice would you give?
I can only agree with what Aino Laberenz, the costume designer,
says in »Stilvoll«:»Sometimes I think that I still have not found
my own style. I really like that. It reveals the opportunity to keep
on making new decisions for and about oneself.«
Many thanks for the interview!
