Nen and Tonda: Two languages of Southern Papua New Guinea<br />
Bewilligung: 25.03.2011 Laufzeit: 3 <strong>Jahr</strong>e<br />
This project will deliver detailed mult<strong>im</strong>edia documentation of two undescribed Papuan<br />
languages – Nen and Tonda – from within an almost completely unknown family in Southern<br />
New Guinea, along with more basic materials on two others. Based at the Australian National<br />
University, plus collaborations with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in<br />
Leipzig, the Universität Jena, and the PNG National Herbarium, the project will embed a<br />
German PhD student (Christian Döhler) in a team including a seasoned field linguist (Nick<br />
Evans) and a 50 % fraction post-doc (Julia Miller), two Germany-based typologists (Bernard<br />
Comrie and Volker Gast) from the FAUST (Future Archive User S<strong>im</strong>ulation Team), plus participation<br />
on targeted fieldtrips by an ethnobiologist (Healey) and a botanist (Damas). Particular<br />
foci of the documentation will be the natural world (especially ethnobotany and ethnoornithology),<br />
swidden cultivation, fire management and ethnoecology, mythology, auto-ethnography,<br />
ethnomathematics, and microvariation in language use in a situation of daily multilingualism.<br />
