Utilization and protection of agricultural ecosystems in Central Asian high<br />
mountains – case study Kyrgyz alpine pastures<br />

Building on our experiences from the previous project Establishment of a graduate school<br />
for livestock science at the Kyrgyz Agrarian University in Bishkek" a teaching and<br />
research cluster shall be formed that includes the <strong>im</strong>plementation of a special profile<br />
within a Bachelor study programme at KNAU and four research subprojects which<br />
contribute to the solution of current problems, to the promotion of young Kyrgyz scientists<br />
and to scientific cooperation. Two of the subprojects deal with the study site, concerning<br />
soil and vegetation, one focuses on aspects of herd management and one on agricultural<br />
extension. Highly motivated students from the existing Bachelor programme at KNAU get<br />
the opportunity to complete their studies within the prospective profile "sustainable land<br />
use". Two semesters of lectures which are carried out at KNAU by German lecturers from<br />
HUB are followed by a study project and a Bachelor thesis dealing with current aspects of<br />
research within the project. In addition, Kyrgyz aspirants have the opportunity to do their<br />
PhD studies within the framework of the project including a six-month method training at HUB.<br />
Summer schools and workshops complete the offer for a detailed professional exchange.<br />
