Board of Directors Lay Member Region 2
Sharon Mather
Home Congregation: First Lutheran, Long Beach, CA
Occupation: Executive Assistant
Experience Pertinent to Position: I was a lay delegate at the PSD Convention in 2006
and will be again for 2012. I also served as a lay delegate to the 2010 Synodical
Convention in Houston. Within my parish I have chaired the Stewardship Board, the
Finance Board, and the Endowment Fund Committee, and have been a member of the
Constitution Revision Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Pastor Performance Review
Committee, Currently I serve as President of the Congregation, and I was instrumental in our transition
to Policy-Based Governance two-and-a-half years ago. Over the years I have been a member of eight
different LCMS congregations, primarily due to the fact that I have moved frequently. This has given me
exposure to different styles of worship, leadership, and governance within our churches. As a Wyneken
descendant, I have grown up with quite a few pastors in my family, so I have always felt a close
connection to our synod and congregational life. Yet, I acknowledge that all of this is worthless
compared to the "surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord." (Phil. 3:8) My greatest
qualification is the fact that I am a humble sinner, grateful to have received forgiveness ' and salvation
through Christ.
My Vision for the ministry of the PSW: I would like to see the PSD continue to effectively
resource congregations and schools to fulfill the Great Commission, The direction and decisions of the
District need to be guided by a desire to bring Christ and His unchanging message to people in a way
that is culturally relevant, sensitive to needs, and appropriate for the time and place in which we live.
