Who’s Who Candidate Profiles
Dr. J. A. O. Preus
Home Congregation: St. John’s Lutheran, Orange, CA
Occupation: Executive Vice President for Mission Advancement
Experience Pertinent to Position: I've had a great deal of experience that is pertinent
to the Synodical Nominating Committee through my 30+ years as an ordained
pastor of the LCMS, including, service on the CTCR, Synodical Dispute Resolution
process, Commission on Organizations, Commission on Doctrinal Review,
Commission on Ministry to the Armed Forces, and others. I've served as a parish
pastor, seminary professor and Dean of Faculty at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO, president
of Concordia University Irvine and now senior leader of a large, national social service organization
My Vision for the ministry of the PSW: My vision for the PSD is that it would be faithful in
proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ and that it would not be " ashamed of the gospel, for it is
the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16). My own vision in
allowing my name to stand for this nomination is that, if you choose to elect me, I may "be useful to
the Master, ready for every good work”(2 Timothy 2:21).
Rev. Dr. Larry Stoterau
Home Congregation: St. John
Occupation: District President
Experience Pertinent to Position: Pastor: Emmaus, Alhambra, CA for 10 years
and Epiphany, Chandler, AZ for 18 years. District: Board of Directors and
District Vice President; District President since 2000. Synod: Chairman Council
of Presidents, Blue Ribbon Task Force on Synod Structure and Governance,
Mission 21 st Century Task Force. Alhambra Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors, Alhambra Kiwanis Club, and Chandler Rotary Club.
My Vision for the ministry of the PSW: While these past three years have been the most
challenging in recent history of the District, we continue to have exciting mission opportunities.
Our mission field is most diverse and more unchurched than ever. To address these challenges we
need to assist congregations which desire revitalization with a new mission vision and encourage
other congregations to expand their mission opportunities through church planning and starting new
satellite ministries. We need to lift up our schools as vital mission outposts and create additional
opportunities to support our workers through stressful times.
