To Remove University Lutheran Chapel-<br />

UCLA From the PSW District’s List of<br />

Properties For Sale<br />

WHEREAS, the Pacific Southwest District<br />

Board of Directors, at its January 11, 2012<br />

meeting, decided to lace all seventeen (17) of<br />

the district’s real estate holdings for potential<br />

sale in order to offset $6 million of district<br />

indebtedness, and<br />

WHEREAS, University Lutheran Chapel at<br />

UCLA is included among those 17 properties,<br />

and<br />

WHEREAS, this property currently houses an<br />

active and viable congregation engaged in full<br />

ministry and mission to the UCLA campus<br />

community, and<br />

WHEREAS, PSW District By-lay 2.38 states<br />

that the Board of Directors is “accountable to<br />

the District <strong>Convention</strong> for all its<br />

transactions” and “any decision of the board<br />

may be appealed to the District <strong>Convention</strong>”;<br />

therefore be it<br />

RESOLVED, that the PSW District remove<br />

University Lutheran Chapel – UCLA from its<br />

list of properties available for sale for a period<br />

of 3 years; and be it further<br />

RESOLVED, that the PSW District Board of<br />

Directors work together with University<br />

Lutheran Chapel – UCLA to devise a plan by<br />

which the congregation can remain on its<br />

property; and be it further<br />

RESOLVED, that the Board of Directors<br />

report to the 2015 district convention the<br />

results of this plan; and be it finally<br />

To Protect District Campus Properties<br />

From Sale<br />

WHEREAS, the Pacific Southwest District<br />

Board of Directors, at its January 11, 2012<br />

meeting, decided to place all seventeen (17) of<br />

the district’s real estate holdings for potential<br />

sale in order to offset $6 million of district<br />

indebtedness, and<br />

WHEREAS, included among these 17<br />

properties are three campus congregations at<br />

University of California - San Diego (UCSD),<br />

University of California - Los Angeles<br />

(UCLA), and Arizona State University –<br />

Phoenix (ASU), and<br />

WHEREAS, “brick and mortar”<br />

congregations provide a physical outpost and<br />

center for campus mission and ministry and a<br />

sanctuary for college students facing an<br />

increasingly secular environment hostile to<br />

Christianity; and<br />

WHEREAS, these campus properties are<br />

home to congregations who serve their<br />

respective campus communities, including a<br />

growing population of international students,<br />

and<br />

WHEREAS, the sale of these properties<br />

would signal the retreat of a significant<br />

Lutheran presence at these campuses; and<br />
