Region 2 is probably a gerrymandered region
that reaches south into Long Beach, north as
far as Mammoth and northeast including
Barstow ending just short of Las Vegas, west
into the San Gabriel Valley; and east into a
portion of the Inland Empire stopping just
short of Fontana. This region is experiencing
a changing ethnic population in what had at
one time been an ever expanding suburbia. It
is in that region and given some of those
dynamics that the Region 2 Mission Council
sought to plan, evaluate and administer funds
so that Christian ministry might be
accomplished from funds that have been
given by faithful members throughout our
District.
In the past triennium we have worked with
and helped support ministries with a Hispanic
focus in La Puente, Maywood, Montebello
and Pico Rivera. Two ministries have had an
Indonesian focus, namely in La Puente and
Ontario. One ministry that is an outreach to
the Vietnamese is located in West Covina.
Two ministries with an African immigrant
focus are in the Long Beach and Pasadena
area. One ministry to the Chinese was in
Hacienda Heights. Two ministries that have
received assistance with a primarily Anglo
focus are located in the Antelope Valley and
Mammoth. Some of those mentioned above
no longer are receiving financial assistance.
The goal of RMC2 has been to use mission
intended monies best for accomplishing the
greatest result. We have been working with
decreasing funds, and we are conscientious of
our responsibility to be good stewards of
those monies. Our goal has been to stay
connected with the various ministries and the
faithful workers in their respective fields. We
have assigned members on the council to stay
Region Mission Councils
in touch with particular church communities
to understand the particular situations better.
This contact has involved individual
appointments as well as meetings with the
leadership of congregations. The council as a
whole met approximately once each quarter.
In addition to myself, those who have served
on the council during this past triennium
include: Jo Felton, Arcadia; Rev. Norman
Schmoock, Victorville; Cindy Stock, Long
Beach; Rev. Ron Rehrer, Regional Mission
Facilitator; and Rev. Roger Sonnenberg,
Regional Vice President. It has been my
privilege to serve on the council, and I asked
that my term be completed the end of the
calendar year, 2011.
