8.2.3 Recreational Fishing and Boating<br />

Table 8-7 gives the estimates for recreational fishing and boating activities. In 2000, more<br />

than 2.7 million fishers participated in more than 20.3 million recreational fishing activity<br />

days along the <strong>California</strong> coast, while more than 4 million people participated in marine<br />

boating related activities. Participation rates in different boating related activities varied in a<br />

narrow band around 6 days. <strong>California</strong> had the largest number of marine fishers and sailors,<br />

while it was ranked second, behind Florida, in motor boating in the US. The proportions of<br />

different boating and fishing related activities are given in Figure 8-4.<br />

In 2000 marinas accounted for a substantial economic activity in marine recreation in<br />

<strong>California</strong>, especially in Central and Southern <strong>California</strong>. Table 8-8 and Table 8-9 give the<br />

marina recreators’ characteristics and use pattern.<br />
