2.5 <strong>California</strong>’s <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Economy</strong>: Regional Comparisons<br />

The size of the <strong>California</strong> economy necessitates that a regional perspective be used to<br />

investigate the <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Economy</strong> in greater detail. Five regions are defined in Table 2-9 and<br />

include the coastal counties following the categories used in the 1994 study (except for the<br />

caveat indicated in the Table).<br />

The changes by region were significant. The fastest growth in regional <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>Economy</strong><br />

occurred in the Central region that includes Monterey, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz counties.<br />

The growth rates on all three measures, employment, wages and GSP, were larger than any<br />

other region, driven primarily by growth in Tourism & Recreation (see Figure 2-3).<br />
