During the same years grain quality analysis (protein content and gluten content) were made of a number of different wheat varieties demonstrating varying degrees of Sun pest damage as indicated by visual inspection of the grain. Experiences have shown that the diseases causing most damage for wheat production are the following: yellow rust, loose smut and stinking smut, powdery mildew, and bacteriosis. It is known that yield losses in cereals caused by pathogenic organisms normally are around 10-15%. The development of resistant varieties is one of the most efficient ways to control diseases, benefitting both farmers and the environment. During the past period 35 wheat varieties have been released for the farmers in Kyrgyzstan, including 17 local Kyrgyz varieties. The local varieties are to a high degree selections from the international nurseries developed and distributed by the International Research Organizations like CIMMYT and ICARDA and the IWWIP Program in Turkey. Each wheat variety has its biological features, morphological and physiological characters, including resistance to diseases. Based on the results of phyto-pathological assessment during the period 2007-2009 of Kyrgyz wheat varieties it was observed that the varieties differ in resistance to a number of common wheat diseases in Kyrgyzstan. The diseases stinking smut (Tilletia tritici) and loose smut (Ustilago tritici) were evaluated using artificial inoculation while the diseases powdery mildew (Erisiphe graminis), yellow rust (Puccina striiformis) and bacteriosis (Bacterios) were evaluated under natural infestation. The variety Kyial showed high levels of resistance to loose smut and powdery mildew (0% infection across three years), while it was susceptible to stinking smut with scores of 33.8%, and medium resistant to yellow rust with a score of 11.0% (average across three years). The Variety Tilek demonstrated good levels of resistance to loose smut, powdery mildew and yellow rust with infection levels of 11.0%, 3.3% and 7.7% correspondingly. Varieties such as Asyl, Jamin and Kairak were highly susceptible to stinking smut with average infection levels across the three years of more than 70.0%. The varieties Adyr and Asyl demonstrated resistance to loose smut with low infection rates around 10%, while Asyl, Adyr and Kyial all were resistant to powdery mildew. The results from testing a number of Kyrgyz wheat varieties under artificial inoculation and natural infestation to a number of common diseases in Kyrgyzstan demonstrated that the varieties showing highest resistance to loose smut are Almira, Kairak and Kyial, while the most resistant varieties to powdery mildew are the varieties Asyl, Adyr and Kyial. Good levels of resistance to Yellow rust are found in the varieties Kiyal and Tilek. This information is valuable for recommendation of proper wheat varieties to farmers. 229
