Pantera INIA is the first bread wheat Clearfield ® variety developed by INIA, and the only
Clearfield ® wheat variety, available in Chile, with two effective resistance genes. This variety
was developed under a research agreement between BASF Chile and INIA. The main
characteristic of the variety is its resistance to the family of the imidazolinone herbicide
(IMI), to which belongs the commercial herbicide Eurolightning ® . The resistance to this
herbicide, is inherited from two genes present in a line of wheat (donor parent), which
were introgressed to the commercial variety (recurrent parent) Pandora INIA (TJB 358 -
251 /BUC “S” // CIKO- INIA), by crossing, backcrossing and marker-assisted selection.
This variety solves in part the great problem of grass weeds (Lolium multiflorum; Avena
fatua; Poa annua) occurring in some wheat producing areas, mainly in areas where grass
weeds have appeared resistant to commonly herbicides (Clodinafop-propargil; Diclofopmethyl)
used in wheat. Both varieties were evaluated under irrigated and dryland condition
of the wheat production area of Chile, during the seasons 2007/2008 and 2008/2009.
In these trials were evaluated their behavior in terms of yield, quality, diseases, phenology
and morphology. The results obtained in both agricultural cycle reveal that Pantera
INIA Clearfield ® was no different to Pandora INIA, in color and shape of the grain, in
phenology as well as in the response to stripe (Puccinia striiformis)] and leaf rust (Puccinia
triticina). The grain yield (qqm/ha) of Pantera-INIA Clearfield ® , in some locations
was statistically superior to Pandora - INIA. Pantera-INIA Clearfield ® had no difference
on Pandora – INIA in the grain quality parameters evaluated, as hectoliter weight (kg/hl),
wet gluten (%) and the sedimentation value (cc). The only difference observed was the
greatest vigor shown by Pantera INIA Clearfield ® compared with Pandora INIA.
