Information about grain yield and quality of winter wheat cultivars in most important
agro-productive environments in each country is of great necessity for breeders, producers
and processors of wheat, especially for new cultivars which have been recently
released in production. With that aim, field trials with 23 cultivars of winter wheat were
set up as RCB design with four repetitions at five environments-locations (Osijek-eutric
cambisol, Tovarnik-cernozem, Pozega-pseudogley, Nova Gradiska and Slavonski Brodalluvium
soil type) during one year (vegetation period 2008/2009). Among 23 wheat cultivars
included in this research 20 cultivars were created at Agricultural Institute Osijek
among which Vulkan, Jana, Aida, Felix, Mihaela, Veronika, Ilirija, Renata, Katarina, Zlata,
Seka, Alka, Tihana, Ruzica, Lela, Pipi and Olimpija were recently released (new cultivars),
while cultivars Srpanjka, Golubica and Lucija represents approximately 45 % of Croatian
wheat production. Cultivar Sana, Žitarka and Divana were included as standard cultivars
for grain yield, standard bread quality and improved bread quality, respectively. Grain
yield, test weight, thousand kernel weight as well as indirect quality traits (protein content,
sedimentation value of flour, wet gluten content, gluten index and falling number)
were analyzed. For indirect quality traits analysis average sample of each cultivar per each
location was taken. In relation to the other locations, at Osijek location harvest was finished
before rainfalls which have been very frequent at harvest time in 2009 in Croatia as
well as in some other countries (Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia and Romania) in region. The
highest grain yield (10.050 t ha -1 ), test weight (85.21 kg hl -1 ) and thousand kernel weight
(46.38 g) were realized at Osijek location, while the lowest grain yield (4.705 t ha -1 ), test
weight (78.20 kg hl -1 ) and thousand kernel weight (40.25 g) were achieved at locations
Pozega, Nova Gradiska and Tovarnik, respectively. Over all five environments-locations
the highest grain yields were found for cultivars Vulkan (8.720 t ha -1 ), Jana (8.687 t ha -
1 ), Aida (8.392 t ha -1 ) and Felix (8.327 t ha -1 ) what was significantly higher in relation to
cultivar Srpanjka (7.831 t ha -1 ) which is most dominant cultivar in wheat production in
Republic of Croatia. Although Vulkan, Jana and Aida were most often the most yielding
