The compilers of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Of</strong>ficial Records did not return <strong>the</strong> documents <strong>the</strong>y used<br />

to <strong>the</strong> War Department files from which <strong>the</strong>y were taken, but kept <strong>the</strong>m separate.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> 1940s, <strong>the</strong> National Archives received old War Department documents.<br />

Archivists classified <strong>the</strong> manuscripts that formed <strong>the</strong> basis of most of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Of</strong>ficial<br />
